Position Overview

The Director of Program Management will lead the business and operational activities for the assigned department, medical care unit, or division. This role is accountable for setting direction, managing day-to-day operations, and ensuring the team works in line with organizational priorities and regulatory expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative leadership in shaping, interpreting, and applying current and long-term policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Run daily departmental operations, including scheduling, tracking/reporting systems, staff workload coordination, and issue resolution.
  • Set departmental goals and objectives aligned with hospital or school policies as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Define project scope, assess requirements, and support successful execution of departmental initiatives.
  • Document procedures, identify workflow improvements, and introduce best practices to improve efficiency and continuous improvement.
  • Work with division leadership to build short-term and long-range plans and act as a key point of contact for cross-department communication.
  • Interpret and apply policies related to hiring, payroll, appointments, promotions, placement, and onboarding of faculty and/or staff.
  • Review and approve reclassifications, new positions, and salary adjustments; oversee performance review processes and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Identify training needs, support continuing education, and develop in-house training materials when needed.
  • Guide management staff to ensure compliance with existing practices, policy updates, and current standards.
  • Maintain compliance with safety, regulatory, insurance, and ethical requirements for patients, employees, and property; develop contingency plans for risks.
  • Support annual training plans and multidisciplinary curriculum development, if applicable, and maintain related records.
  • Promote collaboration across divisions to strengthen operational coordination and communication.
  • Contribute to institution-wide policy and procedure updates when they relate to department goals.
  • Develop budget plans, partner with finance leadership on the annual budget, and monitor department financial performance.
  • Ensure financial systems are in place to support effective department operations and policy compliance.
  • Implement quality assurance programs and monitor adherence to accrediting and regulatory body standards, including JCAHO, CARF, and New York State and City Department of Health requirements.
  • Lead department committees and participate in hospital committees as assigned.
  • Handle other related responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 6 years of overall work experience, including 3+ years directly managing projects or programs in a healthcare setting.
  • Prior experience in a management consulting environment is preferred.
  • Proven success leading large programs that involve multiple functions and stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, clinical workflows, and technology requirements across health systems.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and improve structured methods and frameworks.
  • Experience using enterprise project management tools such as Microsoft Project.

Compensation
