Role overview
The Financial Controller will serve as a senior finance leader at The Residence Zanzibar, taking ownership of the resort’s full financial function. In close coordination with the General Manager and department heads, this role is responsible for maintaining financial discipline, meeting regulatory obligations, and supporting strong commercial performance while protecting the guest experience.
Financial leadership and reporting
- Lead the Resort Accounting Department and ensure its work aligns with company objectives and local legal requirements.
- Produce accurate monthly financial statements on time, following company policy, IFRS standards, and Tanzanian statutory rules.
- Run the annual budget and forecasting process and present results, gaps, and variances to the General Manager and regional leadership.
- Prepare management accounts, KPI dashboards, and insightful commentary that support informed decisions across the resort.
- Work with external auditors and internal teams to support a smooth and timely annual audit.
Cost control and operational finance
- Set up and maintain strong controls across all major cost areas, including food and beverage, labour, supplies, equipment, and utilities, to safeguard profit margins without lowering service standards.
- Partner with department leaders to define profit targets, performance measures, and corrective actions when results fall short.
- Create and maintain finance-related operating tools such as budgets, forecasts, purchase specifications, recipe and portion controls, menu summaries, production controls, and management reporting.
- Monitor inventory procedures to ensure correct stock levels, reliable counts, and prompt reconciliations.
Internal controls and compliance
- Build, implement, and improve internal control systems across financial and operational activities.
- Ensure compliance with tax laws, statutory filings, and corporate policies in Tanzania.
- Coordinate internal audits, serve as the main contact for audit matters, and drive quick closure of any findings.
- Protect company assets through effective policies for use, maintenance, repair, and storage of equipment and supplies.
- Apply property policies and procedures consistently across departments and escalate major control weaknesses or compliance risks to Head Office.
Treasury and cash management
- Manage daily cash flow, foreign exchange exposure, and banking relationships to support healthy liquidity.
- Oversee accounts payable and receivable processes to maintain working capital and positive supplier relationships.
- Review and approve capital expenditure in line with approved budgets and the company authority matrix.
Team leadership and development
- Lead, coach, and develop the finance team, promoting accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Train department managers on financial awareness, budgeting, and cost control.
- Work closely with Front Office, Food & Beverage, Procurement, and HR to strengthen financial discipline across the resort.
Qualifications and experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required; professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent qualification is strongly preferred.
- At least 5 years of progressive finance experience is needed, including 3 years or more at Controller level in an international luxury hotel or resort environment.
- Hands-on experience in reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cost management in a complex operation with multiple revenue streams is essential.
- Good knowledge of IFRS, Tanzanian tax and statutory requirements, and hospitality accounting practices is required.
- Advanced working knowledge of hotel PMS and ERP platforms such as Opera, Sun Systems, Sage, or similar systems is expected.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities are needed, along with the ability to turn financial information into clear business insights.
