About the role

EY is looking for an experienced Manager-level Data Engineer to join its Wellington team and help design modern data and AI solutions. The role sits at the intersection of data engineering, integration, and model development, with a strong focus on Snowflake and related tooling such as Fivetran, dbt, and Coalesce. You will contribute to solution architecture, build ingestion and transformation workflows, design data models and data products, and create intuitive ways for users to work with data through visualization and natural language experiences.

This opportunity also includes mentoring junior engineers and providing technical direction on technical delivery. The role is based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) and operates in a hybrid format. Flexible working arrangements, including reduced hours, may be possible depending on the arrangement discussed.

Key responsibilities

• Design Snowflake AI Data Cloud solution architectures.
• Create data models and develop pipelines for ingesting and transforming data.
• Connect Snowflake with ecosystem tools including Fivetran, dbt, and Coalesce.
• Build reliable and scalable ingestion and transformation pipelines using Snowpipe and related tools.
• Work with cross-functional stakeholders to understand data requirements and turn them into technical solutions.
• Guide and mentor junior data engineers while promoting learning and continuous improvement.
• Keep up with emerging data engineering and AI practices to support innovation and technical excellence.

Skills and experience

The role calls for demonstrated experience in Snowflake AI Data Cloud implementation, data platform architecture, and building robust pipelines with tools such as dbt. Strong SQL capability is essential, as is experience with data modelling approaches such as 3rd normal form, star schema, and wide-table designs. Familiarity with integrating Snowflake with tools such as Fivetran, dbt, Coalesce, and PowerBI is also important.

Additional strengths that would be valuable include a degree in Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline; practical knowledge of Snowflake Horizon Catalog; integration of Snowflake with Cortex for ingestion workflows; and the ability to design and train machine learning models using Cortex based on business requirements. Experience with Python, Java, or Scala, as well as the ability to build interactive interfaces with Streamlit or similar frameworks, would be an advantage. The ideal candidate will bring strong problem-solving ability, clear communication, a collaborative mindset, curiosity about data and AI, and prior technical leadership or mentoring experience.

The selected candidate will need to complete employment screening through the employer or its external provider. This is a full-time position with a minimum commitment of 37.5 hours per week. The expected salary range is NZD 120,000 to NZD 140,000, depending on skills and experience.
