Role Overview
Destinus is seeking a seasoned Mechanical Design Engineer to join its R&D engineering organization in Munich. This position is suited to someone with a strong aerospace background, solid hands-on engineering capability, and the ability to guide small teams and projects. The role serves as a technical lead for mechanical design work across propulsion and vehicle programs, including airframe, propulsion, landing gear, and flight controls, from initial concept through the full design cycle.
Destinus develops advanced unmanned aerial vehicle technologies for defense applications, with a focus on speed, accuracy, and cost-efficient performance. The company works with government and defense customers around the world to deliver solutions for mission-critical operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive aerospace component and system design work from concept development through manufacturing, assembly integration, and test support.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and all supporting manufacturing and test documentation.
- Produce technical documentation, including calculations, analyses, and design assumptions that justify engineering decisions.
- Take part in and help run design reviews.
- Coordinate with suppliers and manufacturers, respond to technical queries, and help resolve production issues.
- Choose standard parts, fasteners, equipment, and consumables in line with established best practices and industry norms.
- Support DMU activities and configuration management processes.
Requirements
- A BSc or MSc in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering is preferred; candidates with technician-level qualifications plus substantial relevant experience may also be considered.
- At least 5 years of professional experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer in the aerospace sector.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and assembly methods, including machining, sheet metal forming, composites, and additive manufacturing.
- Solid working knowledge of CAD and PLM workflows, including part design, drawings, and DMU management.
- Good knowledge of engineering material properties.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical ability, including dimensioning calculations, load path definition, basic stress calculations, energy, and power.
- Practical knowledge of seal and fastener design.
- Ability to select auxiliary electro-mechanical components.
- Working knowledge of ISO GD&T is required.
- English fluency is required for day-to-day work.
- Experience with Siemens tools such as NX and Teamcenter PLM would be an advantage.
- Experience designing metallic and composite structures would be beneficial.
- Exposure to hydraulics, fuel systems, and component design would be a plus.
