Role overview
This apprenticeship is designed for someone who wants to begin a laboratory career while working toward a nationally recognised qualification. The role sits within a GMP- and GLP-controlled biopharmaceutical environment and supports the delivery of medicines for people living with rare conditions.
The programme runs for two years and combines workplace learning with academic study. It is delivered with IBEC and Technological University Dublin at the Tallaght Campus, and has SOLAS approval. You will spend three days each week in the Dublin Centre of Excellence laboratories and two days in study. From the first day, you will be part of a quality team supporting late-stage and commercial products, with a dedicated QC mentor to guide your development.
Successful candidates will study toward a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science as a Laboratory Technician. The pathway may also open the door to progression to a Level 7 degree.
Key duties
- Handle samples by collecting, registering, and dispatching them so the correct material reaches the correct test on time, while preserving traceability and chain-of-custody.
- Support quality control testing by carrying out pH measurements and physical checks that contribute to product release and process decisions.
- Keep equipment ready for use through daily calibration and verification, helping maintain an inspection-ready laboratory and reliable data.
- Maintain laboratory glassware and workspaces to a high standard so testing remains safe, compliant, and efficient.
- Order and monitor consumables and chemicals so analysts have the supplies needed to keep work moving.
- Assist with incoming raw material testing to confirm quality before manufacturing use and help avoid delays or deviations.
- Work in line with GMP and GLP requirements and complete accurate documentation to support audits and regulatory expectations.
- Build capability over time by applying classroom learning in the lab, acting on mentor feedback, and gradually taking on more advanced tasks across chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, and microbiology workflows.
- Contribute to quality decisions that help protect patients and maintain a reliable medicine supply.
Entry requirements
- A pass or Grade O6 in five Leaving Certificate subjects, including maths and one science-related subject.
- At least 250 CAO points, or an equivalent qualification for applicants aged between 18 and under 23 years.
- A FETAC Level 5 qualification in a relevant field will also be considered.
- Approval as a SOLAS apprentice is required.
Desirable profile
- Interest in laboratory science and a willingness to learn in a regulated setting.
- Strong attention to detail, organised working habits, and a careful approach to procedures.
- Basic awareness of laboratory safety, good documentation practice, or quality systems.
- Comfort using common office and data tools, with the ability to learn laboratory software.
- Good communication and teamwork skills, plus openness to coaching and feedback.
- Any practical exposure from school, college, or an industrial laboratory would be helpful.
What the programme offers
- A structured apprenticeship leading to a nationally recognised laboratory qualification.
- Hands-on learning in a GMP/GLP biopharmaceutical environment.
- Mentorship from an experienced QC professional.
- Experience across quality control, laboratory operations, and supporting late-stage and commercial medicines.
- A development route that can progress to a Level 7 degree.
