Stellenbeschreibung
Role overview
This permanent full-time role is based in Mt Albert, Auckland, and is part of the current Plant & Food Research group within the Bioeconomy Science Institute. The opportunity focuses on applying microscopy, quantitative image analysis, and automation skills to support high-quality science across multiple research programmes.
You will work with advanced light and electron microscopy methods, biological sample preparation, and robust image analysis processes that support reproducible and scalable research outputs. The role also contributes to facility support, user training, and the safe operation of specialist imaging equipment.
Key duties
- Prepare biological samples, capture quality imaging data, and operate advanced light and electron microscopy systems.
- Build, improve, and standardise image analysis workflows for tasks such as segmentation, quantification, and batch processing.
- Partner with senior scientists, data specialists, and facility users to shape imaging and analysis solutions that suit each project’s needs.
- Help produce technical summaries, imaging outputs, and other supporting material for internal and external reporting.
- Contribute to the safe day-to-day running of the microscopy facility through equipment care, biosafety compliance, health and safety practices, and user support/training.
What you need to bring
The role calls for a relevant tertiary qualification such as a BSc, along with experience gained in a research setting, shared facility, or technical laboratory environment. Hands-on experience with biological sample preparation and handling is important, together with a strong focus on detail, quality, reproducibility, and safety.
You should have some familiarity with light and/or electron microscopy and an interest in building deeper specialist capability. Experience creating reproducible image analysis workflows with tools such as FIJI/ImageJ is valuable, especially where it includes optimisation, batch processing, scripting, or automation.
The position also requires the ability to turn biological or experimental questions into suitable imaging and analysis plans, plus a collaborative approach, adaptability across multiple projects, and a commitment to safe laboratory practice and a positive team environment.
Benefits
- Four weeks of annual leave, plus 7 extra days of leave and generous paid parental leave.
- Choice of retirement savings and wellbeing/health benefits.
- Enhanced sick leave and a strong focus on health and wellbeing.
- Ongoing opportunities for career development.
- Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid work options and flexible hours.
- Onsite childcare in Auckland.
