Senior Project Engineer

Role overview

Mayne Engineering Group is expanding its engineering function and is looking for a Senior Project Engineer to help deliver major Data Centre and large-scale infrastructure work across Australia. This is a full-time hybrid position based in the Greater Melbourne Area, combining site presence with remote work. The role centres on leading the technical delivery of complex building services and multidisciplinary projects, with particular emphasis on mission-critical facilities and data centres.

Key responsibilities

• Offer technical guidance to a broad group of stakeholders, making sure the services design is efficient, practical, and compliant.
• Handle the people-side of delivery by working closely with clients and construction teams.
• Take ownership of projects from early concept through to commissioning, contributing across the full delivery lifecycle.
• Look for value-engineering opportunities that reduce cost or shorten timelines without lowering quality.
• Join coordination and clash-detection sessions for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems so integration issues are resolved before construction starts.
• Review and audit engineering calculations and design outputs to uphold accuracy and compliance standards.
• Carry out site inspections to confirm installations align with design documentation and satisfy Australian standards, project briefs, and relevant healthcare or mission-critical requirements.
• Prepare concise monthly progress updates for clients that translate technical progress into business-level reporting.
• Liaise with external utility providers such as power, water, and telecommunications authorities to support the infrastructure needs of high-demand sites.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate brings strong project leadership capability across project management, project engineering, and project planning. You should have a solid technical grounding in electrical or mechanical engineering, ideally gained in complex infrastructure, mission-critical facilities, or data centre environments. Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams. Experience managing projects end to end, including ECI, tender support, delivery, and commissioning, is important. A bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline, is required. The role also calls for at least 5 years of experience in design and construction projects, familiarity with relevant standards, codes, and safety requirements, and the ability to balance technical quality against program, cost, and risk. Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to continuous improvement is also valued.
