Software Development Manager, ICON

Role overview

Amazon's Intelligent Cloud Hosting (ICON) team is seeking a Software Development Manager to help build innovative software that improves developer productivity and strengthens security, availability, efficiency, compliance, and maintainability across Amazon. The work is aimed at removing large amounts of repetitive and low-value effort for development teams, with impact across tens of thousands of engineers.

What you will do

In this role, you will lead the design, implementation, and delivery of large, complex, and high-priority software initiatives within next-generation managed hosting platform technologies. You will shape team priorities and technical direction, work closely with senior leaders and operational stakeholders, and partner with several teams to create new capabilities that improve Amazon's retail website for customers.

You will also tackle difficult technical problems, balance multiple priorities, and help bring structure to ambiguous situations. The role calls for someone who can think broadly, dive deeply when needed, and communicate clearly across teams and leadership levels.

Team environment

The Dublin ICON group includes System and Software Development Engineers as well as an Applied Scientist, giving the manager access to a broad mix of expertise for end-to-end solution building. The team supports Amazon websites and backend platform services that power customer experiences, operates hundreds of Tier-1 services for internal customers, and helps automate operational work so teams can focus on innovation.

Day-to-day responsibilities

• Deliver influential, high-visibility projects used across many Amazon Retail services.
• Create processes, tools, and technical approaches that multiply impact across organizations.
• Own projects and experiments from scoping through delivery, using statistical analysis, pattern recognition, and machine learning where appropriate.
• Work through a broad range of technical and product challenges to guide decisions that best serve customers.

Required experience and qualifications

• Strong understanding of engineering practices across the full software, hardware, and networking lifecycle, including coding standards, reviews, source control, builds, testing, certification, and live-site operations.
• Background in managing engineering teams.
• Hands-on engineering experience.
• Experience leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services.
• Experience working with product and program management partners.

Preferred background

• Ability to work with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to gather requirements, explain product features, define technical designs, and shape product strategy.
• Experience hiring, mentoring, coaching, and managing software engineers to help them grow and improve their effectiveness.
