About the organisation

Datacom brings people and technology together to help communities tackle challenges, open up opportunities, and build new possibilities.

About the role

The business and customer landscape is evolving, and Datacom is investing heavily in AI to deliver a major uplift across the ANZ market. The company is looking for an AI Architect to shape the technical direction of AI-enabled products and services.

In this position, you will act as the primary technical authority for secure, scalable, production-ready AI architecture. You will turn business needs into practical architecture plans built on cloud platforms, large language models, and agentic AI approaches.

Your combination of strong software engineering experience and practical AI capability will be essential. You will support engineering teams, assess and choose technologies, define architectural standards, and help ensure Datacom’s AI solutions are built on a strong foundation. You will also be part of the Digital Engineering leadership team and contribute across multiple workstreams that are shaping the company’s AI future.

Datacom is seeking architects who can balance strategy with hands-on delivery and help position an ANZ business on the global AI stage.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the overall technical architecture for AI-driven solutions across multiple client engagements.
  • Assess, compare, and standardise AI tools, frameworks, and platforms used across the organisation.
  • Create reference architectures, delivery patterns, and implementation best practices for AI solutions.
  • Run architecture reviews and provide governance support to delivery teams.
  • Work closely with product owners, data scientists, and engineering leads to convert business needs into scalable technical designs.
  • Design data architectures that can support AI workloads, including ingestion, processing, storage, and retrieval.
  • Set and promote engineering standards covering AI quality, testing, security, and observability.
  • Support build-versus-buy decisions and manage relationships with technology vendors and partners.
  • Coach engineering teams and raise their capability in AI architecture and delivery practices.
  • Stay current with the fast-changing AI landscape and bring useful insights back into the organisation.
  • Present technical direction, architecture strategy, and solution vision to senior stakeholders and customers.

Required experience and capabilities

  • Strong expertise in agentic AI and multi-agent orchestration, including tools, planning, reflection, and chain-of-thought approaches.
  • Ability to design AI evaluation frameworks with metrics, benchmarks, and quality assurance methods for non-deterministic systems.
  • Practical knowledge of prompt engineering, prompt management, and prompt security, including injection protection and guardrails.
  • Experience ensuring dependable model serving, GPU optimisation, and cost-aware inference.
  • Capability to design complete solutions spanning frontend, backend, data, and AI layers.
  • Experience producing architectural decision records, reference architectures, and technical design documents.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and microservices.
  • Ability to develop AI-focused data architecture, including modelling, pipelines, and governance.
  • Experience designing APIs such as REST, GraphQL, and gRPC for AI integrations.
  • Knowledge of security topics including threat modelling, responsible AI, data privacy, and compliance.
  • Expert-level cloud architecture skills across Azure, AWS, and GCP.
  • Hands-on familiarity with managed AI services such as Bedrock, SageMaker, Vertex AI, and Azure OpenAI.
  • Experience with serverless and container-based deployment patterns such as ECS/EKS, Cloud Run, and Lambda.
  • Knowledge of vector and search infrastructure such as Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector, and OpenSearch.
  • Experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CDK, and Pulumi, along with GitOps practices.
  • Strong focus on AI FinOps and cost optimisation.
  • Excellent Python skills for prototyping, reviews, and technical decision-making.
  • Working knowledge of TypeScript and JavaScript for full-stack solution design.
  • Experience with AI frameworks such as Semantic Kernel and AgentCore.
  • Ability to design for AI observability, including tracing, logging, monitoring, and drift detection.
  • Proven leadership skills, including mentoring engineers and guiding technical teams.
  • Ability to explain complex technical ideas clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Comfort running architecture reviews, design workshops, and governance sessions.
