Aircraft Painter

Role overview

We are looking for a meticulous Aircraft Painter to join an aviation maintenance team in Sydney, New South Wales. In this position, you will prepare, coat, and finish aircraft exteriors so they meet strict industry, safety, and visual standards. The work plays an important part in protecting aircraft from wear and environmental exposure while ensuring they present a clean, professional appearance.

You will handle a range of aircraft types and apply your skills in surface preparation, spray application, detailing, and final inspection. A strong eye for precision and a commitment to high-quality workmanship are essential for success in this role.

What you will do

• Clean, sand, and mask aircraft surfaces to remove old coatings and surface contaminants before painting.
• Apply primers, base layers, and finishing coats in line with manufacturer directions and industry requirements.
• Operate spray-painting tools and related equipment to achieve smooth, consistent coverage.
• Work from technical drawings, blueprints, and instructions to produce markings, lettering, logos, or custom design elements.
• Check finished surfaces for coating quality, including thickness, shine, and colour consistency.
• Carry out touch-ups and repairs where needed so the aircraft continues to meet appearance and compliance standards.
• Look after painting tools and equipment by cleaning them and keeping them in good working condition.
• Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and maintain a tidy and hazard-free workspace.
• Keep accurate records of completed work, materials used, and methods followed.
• Coordinate with maintenance colleagues so aircraft are completed and released on schedule.
• Observe environmental rules related to chemicals and hazardous substances used in the painting process.
• Help plan painting schedules and timelines to support on-time project completion.

What we are looking for

• Previous experience as an Aircraft Painter or in a similar painting role such as automotive or industrial refinishing.
• Practical knowledge of aircraft coating methods, materials, and application processes.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
• Hands-on skill with spray guns, sanders, buffers, and other painting equipment.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to deliver a polished, high-standard finish.
• Understanding of safety requirements when working with chemicals and hazardous materials.
• Physical capability and dexterity to work in confined areas or at height when required.
• Ability to work effectively with technicians, engineers, and other team members.
• Strong planning, organisation, and time-management skills.

Preferred background

• Experience with different aircraft categories, including commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and private jets.
• Exposure to corrosion control and metal preparation/treatment processes.
• Awareness of environmentally safer paints and coating techniques.
• Capability to apply detailed branding, logos, or complex custom graphics.
• Aircraft painting certification or a related qualification is an advantage, though not essential if experience is strong.
• Understanding of aviation standards and regulations related to paint and surface finishing, including FAA or EASA-style guidelines.
• Training in hazardous material handling, such as OSHA or WHMIS certification.
