AI Product Engineer (TypeScript/Angular/Java)

About the role

This position is for a New Zealand-based AI Product Engineer working remotely on a focused build for a long-term construction technology client. It is a practical engineering role with a strong product element, where you will help decide what should be built and then deliver it end to end.

The initial engagement is planned as a four-month sprint focused on a small set of carefully selected features and improvements, with a strong possibility of continuing beyond that if the work goes well. Much of the product surface you will work on is greenfield or loosely connected to existing systems, so you can move quickly without being weighed down by old legacy code.

You will be given a data model and a clear target outcome, but the implementation approach will largely be yours to shape. AI is a core part of the workflow, and modern agentic coding tools are used daily as a productivity multiplier for strong engineers rather than as a substitute for them. The emphasis is on choosing the right problem, shipping it well, and keeping the solution stable and maintainable over time.

Compensation

The compensation for this role is NZD 8,000 to NZD 12,000 per month.

Key responsibilities

• Work directly with product and client stakeholders to uncover the real need and turn it into something that can be built sensibly.
• Take ownership of features from early scoping and solution design through development, testing, and release.
• Use AI coding assistants to work efficiently while maintaining strong control over code quality, structure, and long-term maintainability.
• Design and integrate AI-powered functionality, including prompt refinement, evaluation methods, and guardrails that help production features behave reliably.
• Develop within a defined data model and contract, and call out mismatches or unclear assumptions early instead of building the wrong solution quickly.
• Share learnings with product and client teams so each iteration improves on the last.

• You combine engineering ability with product judgment, asking why something should be built before focusing on how to build it.
• You are comfortable challenging ideas that are not worth pursuing and equally comfortable delivering the right solution efficiently.
• You can engage confidently with non-technical stakeholders, understand their workflow, and identify the real blocker behind an initial request.
• You are capable across the front end, back end, and data layers, and you can move a feature through to production without needing constant direction.
• You understand the strengths and limitations of current AI models and coding agents, and you know when to rely on them and when to avoid them.
• You write maintainable code that other engineers can understand and support long after launch.
• You can clearly explain technical trade-offs to product leads, clients, and engineers and align everyone around a shared direction.

Technology stack

The role is centered on a TypeScript and Angular front end, with a back end built mainly in Java and some Python. A significant portion of the work involves API integrations built in Java, so strong Java capability is important.

• Front end: TypeScript and Angular.
• Back end: Mainly Java, with some Python.
• Real-time data layer: Google Firebase as the source of record, using a hierarchical JSON document store with publish/subscribe behavior.
• Project databases: Temporary PostgreSQL instances spun up for active projects and removed when no longer needed.
• Storage and infrastructure: Google Cloud Storage for files, objects, and backups, managed through scripted per-project runs.

Working arrangements

This role is based in New Zealand and can be performed remotely from anywhere in the country. Because the client and broader team are in the United States, there may be a need to shift working hours slightly to maintain healthy overlap with the US west coast. The exact schedule will be agreed together, and there is no expectation of very early starts.

You will join the New Zealand team and be supported by an established UK business that has been placing senior engineers with international clients for years.
