About the Role
The Second Deckhand position supports seasonal barge transportation work in Yukon Territory, Canada. The role is hands-on and site-based, with responsibilities centered on cargo handling, mooring, deck upkeep, and overall vessel support in remote river settings.
You will work alongside the captain and deck crew to help keep daily marine operations safe, efficient, and aligned with required procedures. This opportunity is intended for the 2026 navigation season.
Responsibilities
- Assist with loading and unloading barges, including securing cargo properly for transport.
- Handle mooring lines, rigging gear, and towing equipment during docking and transit.
- Support safe vessel movement and routine deck work as directed by the captain.
- Keep deck areas, tools, and equipment clean, tidy, and well organized.
- Carry out basic inspections and routine upkeep of deck tools and equipment.
- Observe marine safety standards, operating procedures, and environmental rules at all times.
- Coordinate with the captain and crew to meet day-to-day operational needs.
- Help with fuel transfer, material movement, and other general labor tasks when needed.
- Take part in safety meetings, emergency practice drills, and operational planning.
- Assist with mobilization and shutdown activities at the beginning and end of the season.
- Work safely in remote locations and adapt to changing weather and river conditions.
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, site-based role for the 2026 navigation season. The work takes place in remote river environments, and the position is expected to support operations throughout seasonal start-up, active service, and shutdown.
