Role Overview
The General Manager role is a contract, on-site position in Queenstown, responsible for leading the organisation’s day-to-day operations, long-term planning, and strategic delivery. The position carries responsibility for guiding the organisation’s strategic plan and key performance indicators, managing budgets and funding, and maintaining strong administrative and board reporting processes.
The role also involves coordinating staff and volunteers, strengthening relationships with local partners and sponsors, representing the charity in meetings, events, and community settings, and overseeing fundraising and grant-related activity. A major part of the job is monitoring programme results and ensuring that all work remains aligned with the organisation’s social and environmental mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily operations and provide overall management direction for the organisation.
- Plan, track, and support delivery of the long-term strategic plan and related KPIs.
- Manage budgets, funding streams, and general financial oversight.
- Ensure administration is handled effectively and reporting to the board is timely and accurate.
- Coordinate employees and volunteers to support smooth delivery of activities and projects.
- Build and maintain partnerships with community organisations, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
- Represent Sustainable Queenstown at meetings, events, and within the wider community.
- Oversee project planning, event delivery, fundraising, grant applications, and outcome monitoring.
Skills and Experience
- Proven leadership and management experience, including team coordination, oversight of performance, and administrative responsibility.
- Strong stakeholder and community engagement abilities, with a talent for building relationships across varied groups.
- Experience managing projects and events, including planning, budgeting, logistics, and reviewing impact.
- Background in fundraising, grant writing, and financial management within a non-profit or community-based environment.
- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and clear report writing.
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, environmental action, or social impact work, ideally in a community setting.
- Comfort working on-site in Queenstown, handling competing priorities, and staying effective in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
