Role Overview
This position is responsible for leading one or more high-technology projects from start to finish, including hardware and software development, manufacturing, and testing of electronic and electro-mechanical systems. The role ensures contractual commitments are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standard.
The incumbent will act as the main point of contact for customers on assigned projects, which are typically high-value engagements in the range of US$15 million to US$50 million. The assignment is expected to focus on higher-risk, high-value programs at total system level and will support the Regional Consortium as well as Auckland, New Zealand programs. Responsibilities may evolve over time based on business needs, customer requirements, and the overall New Zealand portfolio.
This role operates with limited supervision and requires regular use of independent judgment and significant decision-making authority.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee several projects in line with contract terms, internal policies, procedures, and departmental direction.
- Ensure delivery is efficient and commercially sound while meeting contractual commitments.
- Act as the primary liaison for customers on assigned work.
- Drive project execution so technical, cost, and schedule targets are achieved in partnership with Engineering, Services, and Operations.
- Work with other Project/Program Managers to balance competing priorities across the portfolio, coordinate resource sharing, and maintain clear communication with stakeholders.
- Monitor, approve, and control all phases of project activity from proposal through design, procurement, subcontracting, manufacturing, testing, delivery, installation, and acceptance.
- Coordinate integration of cross-functional teams drawn from different parts of the company.
- Manage major programs with sales value of US$10 million or more.
- Handle project financial performance to support profit delivery and cash collection.
- Apply Earned Value Management practices.
- Identify, manage, and reduce project risks proactively.
- Flag issues early enough to allow timely resolution.
- Support revenue growth through contract variations and planned product improvements.
- Prepare proposals for new business opportunities.
- Review technical solutions, feasibility, and cost estimates.
- Lead preparation of proposals, statements of work, specifications, cost estimates, and contract negotiations and administration.
- Support marketing of new technologies and help win follow-on work with Business Development and senior leaders.
- Where required, directly manage staff and carry out people-management duties such as performance reviews.
- Follow Cubic’s Quality Management System.
- Comply with health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
- Observe security requirements and related procedures.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A university degree, or an equivalent qualification, in Project Management, Information Systems and Technology Management, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Professional certification in PRINCE2 or PMBOK.
- At least 10 years of experience delivering projects, including complex technology programs with multiple stakeholder groups.
- Relevant customer-facing experience suited to the type of project being managed.
- Proven background working with several customers, internal stakeholders, and implementation teams with competing priorities.
- Strong command of MS Office tools, especially Microsoft Project; experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams is also expected.
- Exposure to Oracle Primavera P6 is an advantage.
- Demonstrated success managing multiple high-value projects and associated teams simultaneously.
- Clear evidence of decisive, proactive leadership and effective people management.
- Ability to contribute to business development activity.
- Professional communication style and the ability to build trusted working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain ideas, issues, and technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong commercial understanding.
- Comfort with change and ambiguity.
- Good influencing and negotiation ability.
