Role Summary
This position supports the Store Manager with day-to-day store operations to keep thrift store activities running smoothly. When needed, the role also performs the duties of a Sales Associate.
Key Duties
- Provide courteous and positive interactions with customers and donors.
- Safeguard the condition and integrity of donated goods.
- Accurately process customer purchases, including cash and debit transactions.
- Help support store budget goals by maintaining strong customer service standards.
- Open and close the store in line with established procedures when required.
- Receive, sort, load, unload, pack, price, and store donated materials.
- Use product knowledge to answer customer questions by phone or in person.
- Monitor store activity with attention to safety and security.
- Handle merchandise safely and neatly, including stock rotation support.
- Assist with inventory control through receiving, sorting, and pricing according to instructions.
- Support store presentation efforts such as layouts, window displays, and merchandise displays, while maintaining a tidy sales floor.
- Replenish stock as directed and remove items from the sales floor when instructed.
- Ensure donated goods are sorted and processed according to quality expectations.
- Keep the store clean, organized, and well maintained through tasks such as restocking, sweeping, dusting, and mopping.
- Follow all store policies and procedures.
- Assist with cycle counts and inventory reconciliation.
- Deliver excellent service to guests and donors.
- Act as a working team lead for Store Associates when the Store Manager is unavailable.
- Provide basic operational guidance and on-the-job support to staff when needed.
- Maintain a safe workplace by following health and safety requirements.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Working Relationships
Internal contacts include NRO Administration, TS management, and store staff. External contacts include donors, clients, and contractors.
Reporting Structure
The role reports to the Store Manager and does not have direct reports.
Financial and Material Responsibility
This position may train others on certain procedures, carries moderate material responsibility, and may occasionally handle small amounts of cash.
Working Conditions
- This is a permanent full-time position.
- Work is performed in a standard retail store setting.
- The job involves continuous physical activity, including stretching, lifting up to 30 pounds without help, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking.
- Exposure to dust, fumes, and changes in temperature is frequent.
- Deadlines must be met consistently.
- The work includes regular interaction and occasional conflict resolution with guests, donors, vendors, and employees.
- Tasks vary, and some duties are repetitive.
Education and Experience
- Some high school education is required.
- Two years of experience in a store or warehouse setting is expected.
- An equivalent mix of education and experience may also be considered.
Other Requirements
- Willingness to understand and support the mission of The Salvation Army in Canada as it relates to the role.
- Ability to work in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and the organization’s safety policies and procedures.
- Successful completion of any required screening and background checks, subject to the organization’s discretion.
- Adherence to the organization’s mission statement, code of conduct, and professional standards.
Compensation
The target pay range for this role is $18.50 to $23.13 per hour, with a maximum of $27.76 per hour. Placement within the range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications.
