Safety Specialist

About the role

Amentum is looking for a Safety Specialist to help support a specialized U.S. Navy program operating from Diego Garcia. The position focuses on building and maintaining a strong safety culture, keeping work activities aligned with required standards, and helping ensure day-to-day operations stay incident-free.

What you will do

• Support the creation, rollout, and ongoing upkeep of a comprehensive safety program that meets applicable regulations and internal requirements.
• Carry out workplace and site inspections, then prepare safety and monitoring reports to assess compliance with established safety practices.
• Investigate incidents thoroughly, document findings, determine root causes, and suggest corrective steps to reduce the chance of repeat issues.
• Update safety records as needed by reviewing, editing, adding, or removing asset-related documentation to maintain accurate files.
• Track and support safety activities across operations to help prevent hazards and strengthen mitigation and control measures.
• Perform risk assessments and put corrective actions in place to maintain a safe working environment.
• Train and guide employees on safe work practices, operational safety procedures, and compliance expectations.
• Promote effective accident-prevention practices and help ensure adherence to relevant standards and regulations.
• Work with management and other stakeholders so that safety goals support broader operational objectives.
• Keep current on safety rules and industry best practices, then use that knowledge to improve the safety program over time.

Requirements

• Demonstrated background in implementing safety programs, conducting safety inspections, and supporting workplace safety operations.
• Working knowledge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Safety and Health Requirements Manual and other relevant safety standards.
• Ability to write detailed safety reports and handle incident investigations effectively.
• High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and administrative abilities with careful attention to detail.
• Experience using safety reporting tools and maintaining records in digital safety systems.
• Valid passport and the ability to travel internationally.
• Passport must have at least one year of validity remaining at the time of hiring.
• Must be able to pass contract medical requirements and remain compliant throughout the deployment period.

Preferred qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a closely related technical field.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety and Health certification, or an equivalent safety qualification.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential, or a comparable safety certification.
• Experience working in austere OCONUS environments with multicultural or multinational teams.
• Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving ability for identifying hazards and applying practical solutions.
• Prior experience creating and delivering safety training programs.
