Position Summary
The Lead Gate Attendant/Scale Operator oversees the accurate tracking of waste entering the post-collection site, collects applicable customer usage charges, and helps coordinate the day-to-day work of gate and scale staff with the Operations Clerk, Operations Supervisor, and/or Operations Manager. This role also helps ensure that all activities follow company policy and meet applicable federal and state rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Check special waste records to confirm they are completed properly, ensure manifests are logged accurately, and verify that Operations is completing required initial and random inspections.
- Carry out weekly radiation checks at the scale house where required.
- Report any problems with scale-house security systems to the Operations Clerk, Operations Supervisor, and/or Operations Manager, and arrange vendor repairs when needed.
- Review daily work schedules to estimate staffing needs for efficient scale-house coverage and adjust work methods when necessary to keep production on track.
- Recommend ways to improve operating methods, turnaround times, and the handling of inbound and outbound weight processing.
- Lead employees in completing assigned work, explain policies, instructions, specifications, blueprints, or job orders when needed, assign tasks, and coordinate shift or department activities with supervisors or managers.
- Train new team members or help with their training.
- Make sure the scale house is cleaned and restocked for the next shift at the end of each shift.
- Support the Operations Clerk with filing daily paperwork, resolving ticket discrepancies, reviewing video footage, and similar tasks.
- Identify the type of material coming into the facility so the customer can be billed correctly.
- Approve or refuse waste loads based on content and suggest alternatives when special waste, waste type, or local market training calls for it.
- Collect customer payments and issue receipts.
- Reconcile daily receipts to ensure accurate records and correct billing, then deposit the receipts into the safe depository.
- Record incoming waste using truck scales and computer systems and maintain an accurate total of material entering the facility.
- Inform operations about special waste or other special incoming loads, direct or dispatch as needed, and complete the paperwork required to process those loads.
- Answer calls and provide general information to callers.
- Keep the work area clean and orderly.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Strong time-management skills, with the ability to complete personal tasks and staff-related responsibilities safely and efficiently.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to share operational issues with management; able to work well with others and encourage team performance.
- Good follow-through and the ability to stay on schedule and handle issues as they arise.
- Ability to follow company policies and rules, support safety standards, and act honestly and dependably.
- Prior experience handling cash and balancing receipts or cash totals.
- Experience using computers and different software programs in a non-home work setting.
- Previous work in the waste services industry.
