Deskripsi pekerjaan

Role overview

Nova Scotia Health is hiring a Utility Worker to support the day-to-day functioning of the Sterile Processing Department in Halifax. In this permanent hourly full-time role, you will work under the direction of the Manager and Supervisor and help keep patient-care supplies and medical devices moving safely and efficiently through the decontamination and reprocessing workflow.

This position is based in the Central Zone at the Halifax Infirmary Robie Street Entrance - QEII. It is a unionized support role within the NSGEU bargaining unit.

What you will do

Your work will involve collecting contaminated items from patient care areas, delivering cleaned items back to those areas, unloading washers, drying patient-care items, and moving decontaminated operating room instruments within the department. You will also complete required documentation and communicate with patient care areas as part of the regular workflow.

Qualifications and experience

The ideal candidate has Grade XII and strong reading and writing ability, along with solid communication skills and the confidence to work on their own. The role suits someone who can perform well in a busy, physically demanding environment.

Experience handling blood and body fluids, together with knowledge of routine practices, is needed. Prior practical exposure to decontamination and sterilization work for patient-care items, plus a theoretical understanding of proper procedures in that setting, is also expected. WHMIS certification is required. Ability in additional languages is considered an advantage, with French preferred.

The selected candidate must complete and pass a functional assessment to confirm the physical ability to carry out the role. A skill test will also be part of the hiring process.

Working conditions

This is a permanent full-time position offering 75 hours bi-weekly. Shifts may include days, evenings, overnight work, weekends, and holidays. Travel between different sites may be required.

The job involves repetitive bending, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, as well as repeated pushing and pulling of carts. You will be standing and walking for long periods and may be exposed to chemicals, blood and body fluids, extreme heat, and humidity.

Compensation and benefits

The hourly pay range for this role is $21.68 to $23.36. Eligible hires may receive a benefits package that includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance, along with a defined benefit pension plan.
