Role overview
Frederic Schad is looking for an experienced Custom Clerk to support import and export clearance activities in Kingston, Jamaica. Candidates will be considered only if they already have relevant experience.
Key functions
- Check tariff codes against the customs records to ensure the classification is correct.
- Keep the company’s internal clearance tracker current and accurate.
- Ensure customs and local legal requirements are met before, during, and after the clearance process.
- Work with airlines, shipping lines, suppliers, and contractors to keep shipments moving smoothly and in line with SOPs and customer expectations.
- Prepare customs paperwork and upload it to the web server.
- Raise requests with finance for duty and tax payments.
- Prepare and file all shipment manifests.
- Track shipment progress and update operational systems such as Ops log and CargoWise according to business rules.
- Follow up with shipping companies to obtain arrival notices.
- Handle export document submissions.
- Coordinate with customs brokers to get the latest updates on cargo being cleared.
- Support the physical movement and dispatch of shipments when required.
- Arrange shipment deliveries to customers in line with standard procedures and customer requirements.
- Apply for customs permits as needed.
- Review invoices submitted by customers for accuracy.
- Assist with delivery orders in PCS (Port Community System).
- Identify and report process gaps or non-conformities so improvements can be made in the role area.
- Prepare customs declarations for both imports and exports.
- Verify tariff classifications with Jamaica Customs.
- Apply solid knowledge of customs laws, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Carry out other operational duties relevant to the position.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree is required.
- At least 1 year of experience in a similar role.
- Working knowledge of MS Office.
- Basic understanding of AFR and OFR operations, including handling, documentation, and customs clearance.
