Role Overview
The Gwich’in Renewable Resources Board (GRRB), based in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, is a co-management body that oversees wildlife, fish, and forest matters in the Gwich’in Settlement Area. The organization values collaboration across cultures and is committed to relationships grounded in respect, compassion, and integrity. It is looking for a capable leader to serve as Executive Director and guide the office’s day-to-day operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the everyday functioning of the Board’s office and operations.
- Lead human resources activities such as hiring, supervision, and performance management.
- Handle project budgets, including an operating budget of about $1.5 million.
- Build and sustain respectful, productive relationships with co-management partners.
- Make sure annual reporting obligations are completed on time.
- Seek out additional funding when needed.
- Administer financial contribution agreements.
- Coordinate with investment managers on the Wildlife Studies Fund (WSF), valued at $3 million.
- Manage annual WSF project allocations according to Board decisions.
- Plan and organize Board meetings, typically two in-person meetings and four teleconferences each year.
- Support Board subcommittees and arrange their meetings, including the finance subcommittee that meets quarterly.
- Maintain accurate minutes for all Board meetings.
- Ensure Board members receive the briefing materials they need before meetings.
- Carry out Board decisions through staff work plans.
- Offer advice and guidance to the Board when requested.
- Put Board policies into action.
Requirements
- An undergraduate degree in biology or administration, along with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- A mix of education and work experience may be considered in place of the above.
- Strong knowledge of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA).
- Background in human resources management.
- Experience in financial management, including proposal writing, budget preparation, and reporting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, plus strong organizational ability.
- Proven leadership ability and supervisory experience.
- A Northwest Territories Class 5 driver’s licence or an equivalent licence.
- Ability to obtain security clearance and pass a criminal records check.
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Preference will be given to qualified Participants of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement and residents of the Northwest Territories.
- Experience working in northern Canada and with northern Indigenous communities.
- Experience in renewable resources management through education, work, or life experience.
- Familiarity with Sage accounting software.
- Valid Standard First Aid certification or higher.
- A master’s degree or higher in a relevant discipline.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual starting salary is $110,000. Benefits include a Northern Allowance of $15,279, a relocation package, RRSP participation, and health and benefits coverage.
