Role summary
The Grader works under the day-to-day direction of the TLC and/or ATL to evaluate apparel and merchandise, identify items with higher resale value, and sort donations into boutique, saleable, and salvage groups. This role also helps keep the processing area orderly, accurate, and productive while meeting Memphis Goodwill, Inc. output expectations.
Key duties
- Follow the organization’s principle that incoming donations should be processed within 24 hours so products keep moving to the sales floor.
- Stay current on brand names, designer labels, vintage and modern styles, and common price ranges to support markdown and markup decisions.
- Work toward and exceed the production target of 4 Dandux/Tallboys each day.
- Sort garments into boutique, saleable, and salvage categories, and keep the grading and processing area clean and organized.
- Inspect donated items for damage, stains, moisture, soiling, broken zippers, missing buttons, and other quality issues.
- Use equipment safely by following required procedures, including pushing rather than pulling and avoiding overfilling equipment.
- Maintain accurate item counts and produce the required number of Dandux/Tallboys according to company standards.
- Check Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notices and remove items that should not be sold.
- Report safety concerns and follow all safety and security practices.
- Carry out additional tasks assigned by the TLC and/or ATL.
Production expectations
The position requires accurate counting and a consistent output of 4 tallboys per day, with a focus on meeting or surpassing that goal.
Physical requirements
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
- Frequent bending, pushing, pulling, and reaching.
- Capacity to stand and/or walk for long stretches.
Working conditions
Work is performed in areas with varying temperatures.

- Build and maintain effective working relationships with the TLC, ATL, team members, customers, and donors.
- Maintain a positive, approachable attitude and a tidy, well-groomed appearance.
- Communicate clearly and provide basic feedback when needed.
- Attend job-related in-service training as directed.
Minimum qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be able to bend, reach, stand for extended periods, and regularly lift up to 60 lbs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic math skills are required.
- Must be available for evening and weekend shifts and able to work a flexible schedule.
