About the Organization
Lookout Housing and Health Society supports adults with little or no income by providing housing and a range of assistance services. The organization aims to keep barriers low so people facing housing or support challenges can access help more easily.
Role Overview
The Homemaker position is based at Yukon Housing Centre in Vancouver, BC, and reports to the Site Manager. This permanent full-time role follows Lookout’s mission, philosophy, and Code of Ethics while helping keep resident and shelter spaces clean, safe, and orderly.
Work Location
Yukon Housing Centre, about a 7-minute walk from Olympic Village Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Schedule and Working Conditions
Work is scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday, with shifts running from 09:00 to 17:00. Each shift is 7.5 hours long. Rest days are consecutive, and the schedule may change with two weeks’ notice. The position includes a probationary/qualifying period of 488 hours with mid-point and end-point reviews.
Compensation
The pay rate is between $23.89 and $25.54 per hour, depending on the applicant’s seniority in accordance with the collective agreement.
Responsibilities
- Keep resident rooms, shelter rooms, and shared spaces clean and tidy.
- Change bedding, make beds, complete laundry tasks, and maintain organized stock levels of supplies and personal care items.
- Perform routine cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and areas such as walls, windows, ceilings, floors, carpets, vents, furniture, mattresses, blinds, and washrooms.
- Sort donations and coordinate the work of volunteers as needed.
- Support clients with personal hygiene and nutrition when required.
- Stay alert and attentive throughout working hours; sleeping during shifts is not allowed.
- Follow and help strengthen all health and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean-shaven area where a respirator seals to the face and complete annual fit testing for a half-mask respirator, as required by WorkSafeBC and organizational safety rules.
Requirements
- Grade 12 completion, plus at least 1 year of recent related experience, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate.
- Crisis Intervention Skills Training is considered an advantage.
- Ability to work alone as well as collaboratively.
- Strong planning and workload management skills.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients and workers.
- Comfort working with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse setting.
- Self-driven, quick to learn, and motivated.
- Good physical and mental capacity to carry out the job.
- Ability to use work-related equipment, including laundry machines.
- If there have been alcohol and/or drug-related concerns, at least 2 years of sobriety is required.
- Ability to pass a Criminal Record Clearance – Vulnerable Sector check.
