Role Overview
Kootenai County is seeking a Lead Custodian to keep its facilities clean, safe, and presentable while also providing day-to-day guidance to a custodial team. This position blends hands-on custodial work with leadership responsibilities and supports the smooth operation of county buildings.
Key Duties
- Keep county buildings neat, orderly, and maintained to a professional standard.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, wax, and buff floors as needed.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, windows, and shared spaces.
- Carry out heavier cleaning tasks such as carpet shampooing and wall washing.
- Mix and use cleaning chemicals and supplies safely.
- Perform minor maintenance duties, including replacing light bulbs.
- Assign work and provide daily direction to custodial staff.
- Help recruit and train new team members.
- Review completed work to make sure quality expectations are met.
- Assist with shift planning and maintaining adequate coverage.
- Track, order, and organize cleaning supplies and equipment.
- Coordinate special cleaning efforts, including deep cleans and seasonal projects.
- Communicate regularly with both staff and management.
- Work a swing shift that overlaps daytime and nighttime crews.
What the Employer Is Looking For
- A high school diploma or GED.
- At least 6 months of custodial or similar experience; prior lead experience is considered an advantage.
- Familiarity with cleaning tools, equipment, and chemical products.
- The ability to work independently and step into a leadership role when required.
- Physical ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs, with or without assistance.
- A valid driver’s license.
