Role Overview
The company is seeking a Senior PCB Designer to join its global ECAD organization in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop PCB layouts according to the specifications shared by the technical team.
- Own the full PCB layout process, from schematic import through to release of production-ready deliverables.
- Create new board layouts from the ground up and revise existing designs where required.
- Ensure designs align with IEC expectations for EMC/EMI, surge, EFT, safety, and reliability.
- Keep PCB design documentation accurate and up to date.
- Take part in design reviews, board inspections, and testing activities.
- Help shape design rules and criteria for new and emerging technologies.
- Review existing designs and suggest improvements related to PCB performance and manufacturability.
- Recommend process enhancements that improve functionality, quality, and long-term reliability.
- Implement design updates based on customer or internal requirement changes.
- Spot technical risks and development challenges, then propose practical mitigation plans.
- Explore new technologies and assess how they may influence future product design.
- Support and mentor other PCB designers and engineers in sound design practices.
- Define PCB stack-ups suited to the relevant applications.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of hands-on PCB design experience.
- Working knowledge of Cadence Allegro and OrCAD.
- Comfortable using at least one PCB design environment such as Allegro or Altium.
- Background in designing complex, high-power, high-speed boards with 4 to 6 layers.
- Understanding of how PCB layout affects EMC performance.
- Awareness of manufacturing constraints and cost-effective, high-volume design considerations.
- Experience using Constraint Manager.
- IPC CID or CID+ certification, or an equivalent qualification, is preferred.
- Familiarity with UL and IEC safety standards.
- Knowledge of power integrity and signal integrity analysis, including simulation tools.
- Exposure to DFM, DFA, and DFT practices.
- Knowledge of thermal management techniques.
- Understanding of ISO quality processes.
- Experience with ECAD-to-MCAD data transfer.
- Knowledge of PCB fabrication and assembly workflows.
- Experience with SVN, PLM, Arena, or similar PDM tools for release, change control, and PCB lifecycle management.
