About Akura Medical
Akura Medical, part of the Shifamed portfolio, is building a distinct treatment platform for venous thromboembolism (VTE), a condition that impacts as many as 900,000 people in the United States every year. The company has received U.S. IDE approval for its QUADRA-PE study, which is evaluating the Katana™ Thrombectomy System in patients with acute pulmonary embolism. In parallel, Akura is creating NavIQ™, a software platform that converts CT angiograms into 3D pulmonary vascular models to improve visualization, procedural planning, and clot assessment with the goal of delivering better safety, effectiveness, and usability. The company has also completed the first close of a $53 million Series C financing round, led by the Qatar Investment Authority, to support a joint venture along with a new R&D and manufacturing center in Doha, Qatar.

Shifamed LLC was founded in 2009 by serial entrepreneur Amr Salahieh and operates as a privately held medical device innovation hub focused on developing novel products that address clinical needs in the fast-changing fields of cardiology and ophthalmology.
Role Overview
Akura Medical is looking for an experienced and highly capable Senior or Staff Software Engineer to help design, build, and integrate advanced medical imaging systems. This is a senior technical role where you will solve complex engineering challenges while working closely with teams across disciplines. Your work will help create innovative imaging technologies that satisfy regulatory expectations and support improved patient care. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity at the company’s new R&D facility in Doha, Qatar.
Responsibilities
- Help shape the architecture, design, and integration of medical image processing systems with attention to scalability, reliability, and regulatory compliance such as FDA and ISO 13485.
- Build imaging algorithms, visualization features, and core system components.
- Work closely with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and manufacturing groups to make sure technical output matches program goals.
- Carry out feasibility assessments, risk reviews, and engineering trade-off analysis to support design choices.
- Guide and mentor junior engineers by promoting strong practices in design, coding, and testing.
- Coordinate with outside vendors and collaborators to advance imaging initiatives.
- Create and run test plans, along with verification and validation activities.
- Prepare technical documentation, including material that supports regulatory submissions.
- Keep up with new developments and technologies in medical imaging and suggest improvements and new approaches.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred.
- At least 8 years of experience designing and developing medical imaging systems.
- Strong understanding of imaging modalities such as X-ray, MRI, and ultrasound, as well as image processing algorithms.
- Hands-on software development experience with tools and languages such as MATLAB, Python, and C++, plus visualization and hardware integration work.
- Exposure to UI frameworks including VTK and Qt/QML.
- Experience with cloud-based imaging applications and the use of AI/ML methods in computer vision or medical imaging.
- Solid knowledge of quality, regulatory, and cybersecurity standards, including ISO 13485, IEC 60601, and FDA requirements.
- A history of technical contributions such as patents, publications, or conference presentations in medical imaging.
- Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Additional Information
This role is based full-time on site in Doha, Qatar.
Compensation is aligned to role level and location. Final positioning within the salary range will depend on job-related knowledge, location, experience, education, training, and certifications.
