About the role
The Debug team is a multidisciplinary group that has been working for more than a decade on practical ways to reduce the burden of mosquito-borne illnesses. The team brings together mosquito biologists, data scientists, engineers, build technicians, and operations specialists, and works with partners around the world to deploy Wolbachia mosquitoes at scale as part of disease prevention efforts.
In this position, you will design and execute a range of behavioral and physiological bioassays to evaluate the quality and competitiveness of Wolbachia mosquitoes. You will also support the improvement and evaluation of new methods and tools used for mass rearing, sex sorting, distribution, and release operations.
Responsibilities
- Assess the biology and performance of mass-produced mosquitoes through both insectary-based and field-based bioassays.
- Work with teams across disciplines to identify, investigate, and solve mosquito quality issues.
- Evaluate how new rearing approaches and equipment affect key production and performance measures.
Minimum qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Entomology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in insect biology.
Preferred qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience with large-scale insect rearing.
- Background in using pest control products.
- Working knowledge of basic molecular methods, including DNA extraction.
- Ability to analyze and report data using Google Sheets, R, Python, or similar tools.
- Comfort working in a fast-moving environment and adjusting to flexible hours to meet project timelines.
