Role overview
This position is for a Level 3 Network Engineer supporting the JP9101 project in Canberra, ACT. The role is centered on specialist communications and network engineering support across the design, integration, verification, and handover of EDHFCS networking capabilities.
You will focus on secure voice, video, and data communications in converged environments within Defence secure network architectures. Working alongside the Deputy Engineering Manager for JP9101, you will help deliver technical outcomes, carry out engineering assurance tasks, oversee contractor work, and support capability integration in line with Defence standards and IC3SPO engineering procedures.
Key duties
The role involves hands-on engineering support across the full lifecycle of the project, from concept and design through to integration, verification, and sustainment.
- Carry out network engineering work for voice, video, and data communications in integrated Defence settings.
- Provide expert input on telecommunications, data communications, and Defence network architecture.
- Assist in designing secure and resilient networking solutions across LAN, WAN, and related environments.
- Contribute to capability definition and concept development for EDHFCS communications network systems.
- Perform requirements analysis, requirements development, and systems allocation for communication and network functions.
- Maintain clear traceability between network requirements, operational use cases, and system-level capability needs.
- Support development of network architecture and detailed engineering designs.
- Examine technical design documents and specialist network engineering reports.
- Prepare and review engineering artefacts in line with Defence governance requirements.
- Ensure documentation meets Defence, contract, and IC3SPO quality expectations.
- Provide engineering support through integration, verification, and sustainment phases.
- Help identify and manage technical risks, performance issues, and engineering problems.
- Support secure communications, cybersecurity, and network hardening activities with relevant stakeholders.
- Review contractor submissions related to communications and network engineering deliverables.
- Work with Defence stakeholders, industry partners, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to support integration goals.
- Take part in engineering reviews, technical working groups, and design review sessions.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Essential qualifications and experience
- Chartered Professional Engineer status with a recognised professional engineering body, such as Engineers Australia, or the capacity to achieve chartered status.
- Tertiary study in Network Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Strong skills in stakeholder engagement, communication, and interpersonal interaction.
- Proven leadership and team management experience, including the ability to mentor and direct technical staff.
- Experience working within the ASDEFCON contracting framework.
Desirable background
- Industry certifications such as CCNE or an equivalent credential.
- Experience on Defence Capability Projects and/or in CASG environments.
- Understanding of Defence operational, technical, and logistics-related capability delivery requirements.
- Knowledge of relevant Defence policies, frameworks, and legislation.
- Experience leading cross-functional engineering teams across several technical disciplines.
