QC Laboratory Apprentice

Role overview

This apprenticeship is a chance to begin a laboratory career while working toward a nationally recognised qualification that supports the development and release of medicines for people living with rare conditions. The role is based in a GMP- and GLP-regulated biopharmaceutical setting, where you will gain hands-on experience while studying for a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science as a Laboratory Technician.

The programme runs for two years and is delivered in partnership with IBEC and Technological University of the Shannon (Athlone Campus), with approval from SOLAS. The schedule combines three days each week in the Athlone Centre of Excellence laboratories and two days of academic study. From the outset, you will be part of a quality-focused team supporting late-stage and commercial products, with guidance from a dedicated QC mentor who will support your development.

Key duties

• Manage samples by collecting, recording, and sending them for testing, while maintaining clear chain-of-custody and traceability.
• Support quality control testing by carrying out pH measurements and physical checks that contribute to product release and process decisions.
• Keep laboratory instruments ready for use by performing daily calibration and verification activities that support inspection readiness and data integrity.
• Maintain a tidy, compliant laboratory by caring for glassware and keeping workspaces in good order for safe and effective testing.
• Track and replenish consumables and chemicals so analytical work can continue without interruption.
• Assist with incoming raw material checks to confirm quality before materials are used in manufacturing.
• Complete accurate records and follow GMP/GLP standards to meet regulatory expectations and support audits.
• Build knowledge progressively by applying classroom learning in the lab, taking feedback from your mentor, and moving into more advanced tasks across chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, and microbiology workflows.
• Contribute to the quality of medicines by supporting laboratory work that protects patients and helps maintain supply continuity.

What you need to be considered

• A pass or Grade O6 in five Leaving Certificate subjects, including maths and one science-related subject.
• 250 CAO points, or an equivalent qualification, for candidates between 18 and under 23 years of age.
• A FETAC Level 5 qualification in a related area will also be considered.
• SOLAS apprentice approval.

• Interest in laboratory science and enthusiasm for learning in a regulated environment.
• Strong attention to detail, organisation, and a careful approach to following procedures.
• Basic awareness of laboratory safety, documentation standards, or quality systems.
• Comfort using standard office and data tools, with a willingness to learn laboratory software.
• Good communication and teamwork abilities, plus openness to coaching and feedback.
• Any practical exposure to a school, college, or industrial laboratory will be an advantage.
