Role Overview
The Sergeant is responsible for upholding local, state, and federal laws at Mississippi Valley State University while also carrying out the duties of a police officer. This role includes leading, directing, and supporting police officers and other department staff in their day-to-day work.
Key Duties
You will supervise patrol activity and incident investigations, assign shifts, review work schedules, and guide officers in carrying out their duties. The position also involves evaluating prospective hires, conducting performance reviews, and making recommendations related to discipline and retention.
Additional responsibilities include checking police reports, incident and accident records, and daily logs to confirm accuracy and compliance with criminal, traffic, motor vehicle, and university rules. You will help shift commanders improve procedures and suggest operational changes where needed.
Investigations and Reporting
The role requires handling accident and crime investigations and preparing detailed documentation such as State Motor Vehicle Accident Reports and State Uniform Incident Reports. You will also manage evidence, prepare court paperwork, and provide testimony in legal proceedings when required.
Public Assistance and Community Relations
This position includes supporting the campus community with services such as lockouts, escorts, first aid, and vehicle jump-starts. You will also represent the department in community and business meetings and serve as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.
Equipment and Administrative Duties
Responsibilities further include inspecting police personnel and equipment, issuing and tracking police gear, and completing other related tasks assigned to the role.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold Mississippi state law enforcement certification from a state training academy and a valid Mississippi driver's license. Candidates must not have any felony, domestic violence, or DUI convictions. A minimum of 5 years of law enforcement experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with at least 3 years of supervisory experience.
