Job description

About NEXTDC

NEXTDC is developing the backbone of Australia’s digital future by designing, building, and running advanced data centres with efficient, next-generation infrastructure. The business supports the needs of both local and global organisations and operates as an ASX 100 technology company with 16 data centres across 7 major Australian cities, with additional national and international growth planned.

The company values ongoing learning, teamwork, and innovation, and is focused on becoming the leading customer-centric provider of data centre services. Its vision is captured in the idea that cloud lives and AI thrives.

Role overview

NEXTDC is seeking a trades or technical professional, preferably with a mechanical background, to join the facilities team as a Data Centre Technician. This is a 24/7 operational role in a mission-critical environment, with full on-the-job training provided to build capability across data centre facilities management and critical infrastructure.

The position offers hands-on experience with mechanical and electrical systems, including cooling equipment, power distribution, cabling, building monitoring, and fire protection. It is better suited to someone interested in facility operations and infrastructure reliability than pure IT work.

Shift pattern and working conditions

The role follows a 4-5-5 rotating shift roster. Day shifts run from 7:00am to 7:00pm, and night shifts run from 7:00pm to 7:00am. Some shifts may involve travel between sites as needed.

Key responsibilities

You will support the smooth and reliable operation of critical facilities systems and help maintain uptime commitments across the data centre.

  • Coordinate with vendors for upkeep of major mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
  • Monitor, maintain, and assist with critical cooling systems such as CRAC units, chillers, and HVAC equipment.
  • Support round-the-clock operations through monitoring, fault response, troubleshooting, and prompt escalation of incidents.
  • Handle remote support requests and on-site assistance tasks.
  • Work closely with internal teams and customers to ensure seamless operations and successful installations.
  • Make sure visitors and contractors follow all facility rules and site requirements.
  • Carry out manual handling tasks as required.

Training and technical exposure

Full on-the-job training will be provided across data centre facility management, including exposure to cooling infrastructure, electrical distribution, cabling systems, building monitoring systems, and fire safety systems.

Candidate profile

This opportunity is well suited to applicants with mechanical or electrical experience who want to apply their skills in a high-availability data centre setting. Refrigeration Mechanics, Mechanical Plumbers, and Mechanical Engineers are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications and requirements

  • An engineering background in mechanical or electrical disciplines, or a trade certification, is desirable.
  • Experience in mechanical, HVAC, electrical, or building services work is highly regarded.
  • Basic knowledge of data centres and cabling is an advantage.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability is important.
  • Good customer service, communication skills, and a proactive mindset are expected.
  • Australian citizenship is required due to security clearance requirements.

Additional information

  • This role is a chance to join one of Australia’s fastest-growing companies and contribute to the future of AI and the digital economy.
  • The workplace is inclusive, diverse, and guided by strong values.
  • There are strong opportunities for career progression as the company continues to expand.

Mission and culture

NEXTDC is committed to building a workforce that reflects the communities in which it operates, with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
