About the company

Datacom connects people and technology to help communities tackle challenges, unlock opportunities, and discover new ways forward.

Role overview

Datacom is in the middle of a major AI uplift across the ANZ market, and the business is looking for an AI Architect to shape the technical direction of its AI-enabled products and services. This role holds overall architectural ownership for scalable, secure, production-grade AI solutions and acts as the bridge between business goals and practical technical delivery.

You will work with modern cloud ecosystems, large language models, and agentic AI patterns to turn complex requirements into clear architectural plans. With a strong software engineering foundation and deep AI expertise, you will guide engineering teams, evaluate technology choices, define standards, and ensure AI solutions are built on durable technical foundations. You will also contribute as part of the Digital Engineering leadership group, helping influence AI-driven work across multiple streams.

Datacom is seeking an experienced architect who can think strategically, execute hands-on, and help place an ANZ organisation on the global AI stage.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you will own the full technical architecture for AI solutions delivered across multiple client engagements. You will assess, choose, and standardise the AI tools, platforms, and frameworks used across the organisation.

You will produce reference architectures, design patterns, and delivery guidance, while leading architecture reviews and providing technical governance across teams. You will work closely with product owners, data scientists, and engineering leads to convert business needs into scalable technical designs.

Your work will also include designing the data architecture that supports AI workloads, such as ingestion, processing, storage, and retrieval. In addition, you will help define and promote engineering standards covering AI quality, testing, security, and observability.

You will support build-versus-buy decisions, manage relationships with vendors and technology partners, mentor engineering teams, stay current with the rapidly changing AI landscape, and communicate technical strategy to senior stakeholders and customers.

Required expertise

The role calls for strong capability in agentic AI and multi-agent orchestration, including tools, planning, reflection, and chain-of-thought approaches. You should be able to design AI evaluation frameworks with metrics, benchmarks, and QA methods suited to non-deterministic systems.

You will need solid experience in prompt engineering, prompt management, and prompt security, including injection prevention and guardrails. Familiarity with reliable model serving, GPU optimisation, and cost-conscious inference is also important.

A solution architecture background is essential, covering end-to-end design across frontend, backend, data, and AI layers. You should be comfortable creating architectural decision records, reference architectures, and technical design documents, and have a strong grasp of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and microservices.

You will also be expected to design AI data architectures, including data modelling, pipelines, and governance. Experience with API design patterns such as REST, GraphQL, and gRPC, along with security practices like threat modelling, responsible AI, data privacy, and compliance, is required.

On the cloud and infrastructure side, you should have expert-level experience with Azure, AWS, and GCP, plus familiarity with managed AI services such as Bedrock, SageMaker, Vertex AI, and Azure OpenAI. Knowledge of serverless and container-based approaches, vector search infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and AI FinOps is also needed.

Strong programming depth in Python is important for prototyping, review, and technical decision-making, and you should be comfortable using TypeScript and JavaScript for full-stack design. Experience with AI frameworks such as Semantic Kernel and AgentCore, plus observability practices like tracing, logging, monitoring, and drift detection, will be valuable.

You will also need leadership and communication strength, with the ability to guide technical teams, mentor engineers, explain complex ideas clearly to non-technical audiences, and lead architecture workshops and governance forums.
