Job description

About the role

art-K Highams Park is an art club in London for children aged 6 to 16. The studio works with a broad mix of materials and teaching methods to introduce young learners to different artistic styles, including 3D projects.

With more than 50 branches nationwide and over 8,000 students, art-K runs a well-established programme focused on building core art skills and techniques in children. The team is looking for a friendly, practical, motivated Art Assistant who shares a genuine enthusiasm for art and working with young people.

What the role involves

  • Preparing art materials and mixing paints for sessions.
  • Supporting and motivating children while they work on their projects.
  • Helping develop and reinforce artistic skills during lessons.
  • Setting up the studio before classes and clearing it away afterwards.

Training and feedback

Full training will be provided. The organisation also follows a feedback-led culture, where team members receive constructive input to help them improve, gain confidence, and grow in their role. Staff are encouraged to share feedback as well and to approach it with a growth mindset.

Requirements

  • Art GCSE at grade 7-9.
  • Good understanding of artistic methods, including tone and perspective.
  • Previous experience with children is preferred.
  • A positive, proactive approach.

Desirable

  • Studying toward an Art A level, Foundation course, or Art degree.
  • Living within 30 minutes of the branch.

Schedule and working pattern

This is a part-time, self-employed zero-hours position. The current sessions are:

  • Saturday, 8:30am to 10:45am.
  • Saturday, 10:45am to 1:00pm.
  • Sunday, on standby for future club growth.

During term breaks, including half terms and school holidays, work is offered as needed and arranged around workshop delivery and studio requirements. In school holidays, the studio runs Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, usually with two workshop sessions each day depending on bookings. Shifts and hours will be agreed between the Art Assistant and the Branch Manager.

Location and commute

The work location is 400 Hale End Rd, London E4 9PB. Applicants must be able to commute reliably or be willing to relocate before starting.

Safeguarding

The organisation is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and expects everyone working with it to share that commitment. All appointments are subject to a robust safer recruitment process and successful completion of pre-employment checks.
