Job description

Role overview

This role leads art direction for e-commerce photography, from shooting on set through final image delivery, covering digital channels, retail environments, and key wholesale partners. The position reports to the Senior Art Director and is responsible for keeping product imagery visually consistent, brand-aligned, and tailored to different retail needs.

Although the primary focus is the Steve Madden brand, the role also supports Betsey Johnson and other labels in the portfolio. Work includes on-figure photography, PDP imagery, styled still-life visuals, wholesale assets, and broader digital creative work. This position is based in the LIC office and requires on-site attendance five days a week.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with senior leadership to preserve the brand’s e-commerce creative direction while handling the daily execution of photography shoots on set, coordinating with photographers, stylists, producers, and digital technicians to keep output on-brand.
  • Guide model posing, shot order, framing, lighting, and the overall set presentation to deliver polished and consistent imagery.
  • Evaluate image selections and contact sheets, then give feedback on lead imagery, retouching, color adjustments, cropping, and any necessary reshoots.
  • Coordinate between on-set teams and post-production partners so final files are accurate and delivered on time.
  • Build and uphold standards for e-commerce photography, including lighting, crop treatment, retouching, color accuracy, and file setup.
  • Partner with Creative, Marketing, Production, E-Comm / Retail Merchandising, and Design teams to ensure a unified visual experience across customer-facing content.
  • At times, assist the Marketing Creative team with smaller seasonal trend shoots from briefing and pre-production through on-set direction and post-production.
  • Support Betsey Johnson with monthly e-commerce shoots and digital creative work when needed.
  • Lead e-commerce casting and beauty sourcing with the production team, staying current on industry direction and translating those trends appropriately for the brand.
  • Stay informed on fashion, photography, and digital trends while developing creative solutions in a fast-moving studio setting.
  • Handle several projects and deadlines at once while keeping work organized, efficient, and creatively strong.
  • Take on additional responsibilities and special assignments as needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Photography, Marketing, Graphic Design, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in art direction or visual design within fashion, retail, or lifestyle brands.
  • Background leading on-set teams and directing e-commerce photography shoots is required.
  • Strong creative judgment and a well-developed sense of visual taste.
  • A portfolio that clearly demonstrates e-commerce art direction, digital photography, and digital storytelling ability.
  • Excellent skills in communication, organization, relationship-building, and problem-solving.
  • Comfort working quickly and effectively in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented approach with strong collaboration skills.

Compensation and benefits

The expected base pay for this position is $110,000 to $130,000 annually. Final compensation may vary based on skills, training, years of relevant experience, education, and organizational needs.

Benefits include health and dental coverage, life insurance, disability insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid holidays, a generous paid time-off policy, and opportunities to grow within a dynamic team.
