Role overview
Fraser Coast Regional Council is hiring a Building Certifier to support its Regulatory Services team in Hervey Bay. The role is permanent full time and sits at a level where you will help deliver statutory building certification, technical guidance, and compliance outcomes that support safe development across the region.
Location and work style
The position is based in Hervey Bay, Queensland, with remote work available. Even with remote flexibility, the role requires travel to the Fraser Coast for on-site inspections whenever needed.
Salary and benefits
This opportunity is offered under one of two classification options:
- IFA Level 6: $119,126 plus superannuation, with up to 10% attraction and retention allowance depending on experience, $6,000 relocation assistance for suitable candidates, 5 days of recreational leave, and a vehicle for commuter use.
- Stream A Level 6: $104,018 plus superannuation, with up to 10% attraction and retention allowance depending on experience, $6,000 relocation assistance for suitable candidates, a 9-day fortnight, and a vehicle for commuter use.

What the role involves
- Supporting the Manager Development Compliance and Plumbing Services in the council’s principal building certifier function.
- Overseeing regulatory breaches by monitoring, investigating, and reporting on unauthorised building activity.
- Providing practical advice to the public on building certification and compliance matters.
- Preparing evidence for prosecutions where required and attending court as a witness for council when appropriate.
- Coordinating and carrying out routine inspections.
- Assessing and managing development applications for building work as required.
- Helping design and implement monitoring programs for higher-risk premises.
- Improving systems and processes to strengthen efficiency and statutory compliance.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Building Surveying or another closely related qualification.
- Minimum QBCC Building Certifier Level 2.
- Strong working knowledge of the Building Act 1975, Building Regulation 2006, relevant building codes, local laws, and a solid understanding of the Planning Act 2016.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Confidence in listening, advising, and negotiating with a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to prepare correspondence and formal reports.
- Proven experience working in a certification and regulatory environment while meeting statutory timeframes.
- Intermediate to advanced ability with Microsoft Office, RAMS, document management systems, and other local government software.
- Current driver licence.
Preferred background
Experience in town planning would be an advantage.
