Job description
Role overview
Waipā District Council is looking for a qualified, proactive Building Inspector to join its high-performing Building Assurance team. The position is based in either the Cambridge or Te Awamutu office, with regular travel across the district to complete a broad range of building inspections and help uphold strong community standards.
What the role involves
This position supports the Council in meeting its responsibilities under the Building Act 2004 and in functioning effectively as a Building Consent Authority (BCA). You will inspect and certify building work to confirm it complies with all relevant statutory, regulatory, and legislative obligations. The work includes checks at key construction stages for both new homes and alterations, with the goal of delivering safe and compliant outcomes for the community.
The role sits within the Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1 competency areas, so you will be exposed to a varied workload ranging from smaller residential projects to more complex commercial developments.
What the Council is looking for
The ideal candidate is approachable, service-oriented, and works well with others. You should be comfortable building positive relationships and using your practical experience along with a strong grasp of building law and construction processes to support quality outcomes for the district.
Mandatory background and capabilities
- A technical qualification that satisfies Regulation 18 of the Building Regulations 2006 (Accreditation of Building Consent Authorities), such as a National Diploma in Building Control Surveying, Level 6.
- Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1 competency, or the capability to gain and keep those competencies.
- Solid working knowledge of the Building Act 2004 and the New Zealand Building Code.
- Strong written and verbal communication, along with accurate documentation skills.
- A full New Zealand driver licence, Class 1.
What’s on offer
- Support for ongoing professional development, including study assistance.
- The chance to work across a varied and expanding district in a role that contributes directly to safe and high-quality building outcomes.
- Competitive local government pay and benefits, including health and life insurance, retail discounts, subsidised health and fitness memberships, and three days of special leave between Christmas and New Year.
- A work vehicle, with commuting use available for employees living within 35 km of the offices.
