Custodial Officer

Role overview

Serco is seeking a Custodial Officer to join its Acacia Prison team in Wooroloo, Western Australia. This is a permanent, full-time position focused on the supervision, welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates. The role is centered on maintaining a safe, secure, and respectful environment for both prisoners and staff.

Training and development

A fully paid 12-week training program is included, running from 22.06.2026 to 04.09.2026. Availability throughout this training period is mandatory. If you already have custodial experience, your prior background will be reviewed and the training length may be shortened depending on your level of expertise.

What you will do

In this position, you will contribute to the safe operation of the prison while helping inmates work toward rehabilitation and reintegration. You will use professional, respectful, and culturally aware practices to support a secure and constructive environment.

• Monitor inmates and the facility to maintain safety and security using dynamic custodial practices.
• Encourage participation in education, employment, and rehabilitation programs.
• Carry out searches, respond to incidents, and complete accurate reports in line with procedures.
• Build constructive working relationships with inmates, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
• Support a culturally respectful environment that values diversity among inmates and staff.
• Follow health and safety requirements to help maintain a safe workplace.

• A Certificate III in Correctional Practice, or the willingness to obtain it within the first year of employment.
• Clear and effective communication skills, along with the ability to build trust and influence others.
• The ability to stay composed and professional in high-pressure or difficult situations.
• A genuine commitment to working in a culturally sensitive and diverse workplace.
• Physical fitness suitable for the demands of the role, including control and restraint duties.
• A valid driver’s licence.

This role involves a high level of trust and accountability. As part of the hiring process, candidates must complete a thorough probity assessment, which includes a Federal Police Check.
