About the Role
St. Michael's Catholic Elementary School in Trail, British Columbia is seeking a School Custodian for the 2026–27 school year. The school is part of the Catholic Independent Schools of the Diocese of Nelson, which serves schools across the Okanagan and Kootenay regions of British Columbia. The custodian will be responsible for keeping the school building, outdoor areas, vehicles, and surrounding property safe, orderly, and clean to the standard set by the St. Michael's School Council and outlined by the Principal. A more detailed duty list will be shared by the Principal.
What the Job Involves
- Carrying out daily cleaning and upkeep of the school building and grounds
- Maintaining the school vehicle fleet when applicable, including arranging required inspections
- Performing routine repairs and basic maintenance across school facilities
- Coordinating outside contractors for specialized work such as electrical or plumbing repairs
- Scheduling seasonal grounds work, including sprinkler blowouts and fall leaf cleanup
- Completing additional duties assigned by school administration
Daily Custodial Duties
- Sweeping and spot-cleaning classroom and office floors, including weekly mopping
- Disinfecting classroom desktops
- Cleaning student and staff washrooms on a recurring schedule and whenever needed
- Vacuuming and mopping entrances and hallways
- Cleaning floors in the daycare area
- Cleaning commercial kitchen floors twice each week
- Removing garbage from all rooms as scheduled or when required
- Tracking cleaning inventory and placing supply orders as needed
- Carrying out other tasks assigned by school leadership
Custodial Duties During Breaks and Closures
- Moving desks and furniture out of classrooms
- Stripping and waxing floors in classrooms, hallways, and gyms as required
- Cleaning windows and blinds
- Cleaning walls
- Deep-cleaning and sanitizing all washrooms
- Cleaning the on-site commercial kitchen
- Completing other tasks assigned by administration
What We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate is able to work independently with minimal supervision, communicates respectfully with students, staff, families, and visitors, and helps maintain a positive working relationship with administrators, teachers, and colleagues. Preference will be given to applicants with prior custodial experience. The role also requires someone who can ensure equipment and materials are available when needed and who can report emergency repairs completed by others.

Conditions of Employment
Successful candidates will need to provide consent for a criminal record check, proof of legal entitlement to work in Canada through a photocopy of a Canadian Birth Certificate or Canadian Passport, complete Safe Environment Office training, provide a Social Insurance Number, and submit a photocopy of a driver's licence.
