Job description

Role overview

The University of Bath is hiring Domestic Assistants to support its campus accommodation operations, with both full-time and part-time options available. These roles play an important part in helping students settle into independent living and ensuring that accommodation guests enjoy a high-quality stay.

The positions are part of Campus Services, a large department formed in August 2022 by bringing together the University’s facilities teams. Campus Services supports the wider university experience across education, research, student life, staff services, visitors, and commercial clients. Its teams include Student Living, Hospitality, Retail, Cleaning and Portering, Security, Postal Services, and Landscaping.

Working pattern

Part-time hours are 27.5 per week, worked on a shift pattern of either 9:00am to 3:00pm or 10:00am to 4:00pm. Full-time hours are 36.5 per week, with a usual schedule of 9:00am to 5:20pm Monday to Thursday and 9:00am to 5:10pm on Fridays.

The roles follow a 5 days out of 7 rota. Weekend work is required for some cleaning tasks, mainly during the busy summer period, and successful candidates should expect to work weekends on a rota basis.

Key duties

As a Domestic Assistant, you will help keep accommodation spaces clean, safe, and welcoming, while also representing the department in day-to-day interactions with students and visitors.

About the team and environment

University accommodation houses more than 5,000 students during the academic year. In the summer, the accommodation is also used by external organisations for conferences, camps, and away days. The team’s aim is to support excellent service for everyone who uses these spaces.

Additional information

These roles qualify for the Campus Services New Starter bonus and the Campus Services Refer a Friend bonus, subject to terms and conditions. The New Starter bonus is £1,000, payable in the month after successful completion of a six-month probation period. For the Refer a Friend bonus, a current University staff member must have referred the applicant, and the referrer must be named at the time of application.

Applicants should note that the University considers its safer recruitment responsibilities seriously and may remove personal details from applications during initial shortlisting to reduce unconscious bias. Right to work and immigration checks are completed only at offer stage, and being invited to interview does not guarantee visa sponsorship eligibility.

The University highlights its commitment to equality, inclusion, and diversity, including gender equality and intersectionality, and notes recognition such as a Silver Athena SWAN award. It also states that it is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, an accredited Disability Confident Leader, and an autism friendly university.

Benefits

Examples of benefits offered include free counselling through Health Assured, a cycle to work scheme, electric vehicle salary sacrifice, staff discount at Team Bath gym, reduced postgraduate tuition fees, discount on language courses, a contributory pension, generous annual leave plus an extra 5 discretionary days, personal and professional development opportunities such as apprenticeships and LinkedIn Learning, free entry to the Holburne Museum in Bath, local discounts, a family-friendly workplace, an inclusive reward package, and relocation support.
