Role overview

An ecological consultancy based near Essex is looking to add an Ecologist to its team. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a wide mix of projects and help deliver practical, high-quality ecological services. You will work alongside a multidisciplinary group that includes Landscape Architects, Arboriculturalists, and Ecologists.

What you will do

  • Carry out ecological fieldwork, such as habitat checks and protected species surveys, following recognised industry standards.
  • Draft clear, detailed ecological documentation, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments.
  • Advise clients on ecological issues and help ensure work aligns with applicable laws and planning requirements.
  • Support the development and delivery of mitigation and enhancement measures.
  • Work with internal colleagues and external stakeholders to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Stay informed about current ecological practice, legal updates, and wider industry changes.
  • Help mentor less experienced colleagues and contribute to their development.

What is required

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a closely related subject.
  • Previous experience in ecological consultancy or a comparable setting.
  • Good working knowledge of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.
  • Ability to conduct surveys and produce accurate, high-quality written reports.
  • Professional membership with a relevant body such as CIEEM is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, plus good interpersonal ability.
  • A practical, proactive mindset focused on solving problems.
  • Full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel where needed.
