Job description
About the role
Procreate is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead a small group of engineers working on high-impact product initiatives. This position is focused on helping the team deliver major roadmap items, solve complex technical challenges, increase development efficiency, and strengthen the company’s internal engineering capability. The company is building creative software for a worldwide user base and wants someone who can combine strong technical depth with effective people leadership.
Team and reporting structure
This role is part of the product development function and reports directly to the CTO, Michael Shaw. You will collaborate closely with engineering, executive leadership, and colleagues across other departments to keep engineering efforts aligned with wider business priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Steer, coordinate, and bring together engineering work across the team.
- Partner with design to plan and organise feature development in ways that improve long-term maintainability and workflow efficiency.
- Provide constructive feedback, participate in reviews, and support performance management processes.
- Contribute directly to coding and technical work for around 40% to 60% of the role, while keeping hands-on engineering skills current.
Required experience and qualities
- Strong emotional intelligence and a composed, confident leadership style.
- Proven ability to manage and grow diverse teams while creating alignment and shared understanding.
- Capability to explain technical ideas clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- A track record of motivating, supporting, and inspiring teammates to do excellent work.
- Prior experience as an Engineering Manager in a technology, product, or creative company, or senior engineering / people management experience in a tech or startup setting.
- An organised, structured, and detail-focused way of working that builds trust and clarity.
- Ability to bring out the best in individual contributors while supporting both engagement and team productivity.
- Hands-on experience with Swift and iOS development.
- Sound technical judgement and a history of making well-reasoned engineering decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Bonus experience
- Exposure to programming languages with different paradigms from Swift, such as Haskell, C, or Rust.
First 6 to 12 months
- Complete onboarding and get acquainted with the team.
- Develop a strong understanding of the product development approach, including practices, processes, and frameworks.
- Build working relationships with key stakeholders, team leads, and executive team members.
- Help prepare and support the delivery of core features.
- Contribute to shipping products.
Location and work arrangement
This is a full-time, on-site role based in either Hobart or Sydney.
Application note
The company would like candidates to explain how they believe they can contribute in this role.
