Job description

Overview

An expanding, family-operated construction firm is seeking an experienced Estimator to support its continued growth. The business has a strong forward workload and an annual turnover of around £8 million, delivering a wide mix of general building and civil engineering projects typically valued between £50,000 and £3 million.

This position is best suited to a seasoned construction Estimator who is comfortable managing the full estimating workflow, from the first enquiry through to tender submission, while coordinating with suppliers, subcontractors and internal project teams.

Role Details

  • Location: Rayleigh, Essex (office-based)
  • Salary: £40,000 to £55,000 depending on experience
  • Employment: permanent, full-time
  • Working style: office-based with site visits when needed

What You Will Be Doing

  • Producing precise cost plans and competitive tender bids for a range of construction works
  • Studying drawings, specifications and tender packs to understand full project scope
  • Performing detailed quantity take-offs and calculating labour, plant and material needs
  • Sourcing, comparing and negotiating pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Highlighting risks, opportunities and value-engineering options within bids
  • Preparing tender review papers and commercial reporting documents
  • Working with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors throughout the tender cycle
  • Taking part in site visits and pre-tender meetings where required
  • Assisting with handover to delivery teams after a successful award
  • Keeping estimating files, pricing history and cost records up to date

What The Employer Is Looking For

  • Proven experience as an Estimator in the construction sector is mandatory
  • Background in general building and/or civil engineering is a strong advantage
  • Solid knowledge of construction techniques, materials and procurement methods
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and technical paperwork
  • Strong numerical judgement, analytical thinking and commercial awareness
  • High levels of accuracy and good organisational discipline
  • Competence with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage several tenders at the same time
  • A full UK driving licence is required
  • Must be available to work from the office full time
