Job description

Company Overview

Carbon Canopy is an Africa-centered developer of carbon projects focused on large-scale, nature-based solutions that help tackle climate change through voluntary carbon markets. The company builds projects across Zambia that protect and restore natural ecosystems while creating high-quality carbon credits. It works closely with nearby communities, with the goal of supporting sustainable livelihoods through responsible land use and job creation. Its broader purpose is to connect environmental recovery with meaningful social and economic outcomes for the people it serves.

Role Overview

This is a full-time, on-site position in Zambia for a Forestry Manager who will lead forestry operations supporting carbon projects. The role covers planning, execution, and supervision of activities such as forest inventories, planting, thinning, and harvesting, all carried out according to best practices and project requirements.

The person in this role will manage field teams, work with local communities and partners, and help ensure that all activities meet environmental, safety, and regulatory standards. Responsibilities also include checking forest condition, overseeing timber and non-timber resources, keeping detailed records and maps, and contributing to carbon project design and reporting. In addition, the Forestry Manager will prepare operational plans, guide team members technically, and collaborate with other functions so that forestry work supports carbon, conservation, and community goals.

Technical Expertise and Experience

  • Deep knowledge of forestry and forest management, including sustainable planning, silviculture, and long-term resource stewardship.
  • Hands-on background in timber operations and harvesting, with an emphasis on safe, efficient, and low-impact extraction practices.
  • Understanding of urban forestry or community-based forestry models, along with the ability to engage local stakeholders effectively.
  • Experience with nature-based or carbon-related initiatives, ideally in Africa or a comparable setting.

Leadership and Field Requirements

  • Ability to supervise field crews, contractors, and several work sites while maintaining strong organization and leadership.
  • Comfort working in rural field environments and adhering to safety, ethical, and community-inclusive practices.
  • Strong communication ability in English; additional local language ability will be considered an advantage.

Education and Tools

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Working familiarity with GIS, forest inventory tools, and basic data analysis for monitoring and reporting.

Additional Information

The role is based in Zambia and requires regular coordination with cross-functional teams as well as local communities and partners. It is intended for someone who can combine technical forestry knowledge with practical field leadership in support of carbon, conservation, and community objectives.
