Position summary
The Graduate Town Planner role suits a planning professional who has a relevant planning degree along with post-graduate experience in a planning consultancy, a local planning authority, or a mix of both. The position supports a wide range of planning assignments, including strategic advice, planning submissions, masterplans, development frameworks, and Environmental Impact Assessments across different sectors and project sizes. Training and development are included.
Compensation and employment details
The salary for this role is £30,000 to £35,000 per year. It is a full-time position based in City of London, London, within the UK - London region.
Key duties
- Prepare and handle planning applications, and provide strategic planning input.
- Contribute to masterplanning, development frameworks, and wider placemaking work.
- Assist with Environmental Impact Assessments and related planning tasks.
- Support projects for both public and private sector clients, from smaller schemes to large multidisciplinary developments.
- Work alongside architects, urban designers, engineers, environmental specialists, and other professionals to progress project goals.
- Organise project tasks, schedules, and client expectations across several commissions at once.
- Take responsibility for leading smaller to medium-sized projects with guidance from senior team members when needed.
- Mentor and support graduate planners, including reviewing outputs and helping with their professional growth.
- Take part in client discussions, stakeholder engagement, and community consultation activities.
- Draft planning statements, reports, consultation responses, and other technical planning materials.
Required background and experience
- A degree in Planning or a closely related field is required.
- Applicants should have relevant post-graduate planning experience from consultancy, local authority work, or a combination of both.
- Solid understanding of planning policy, development management, and the planning application process is needed.
- Experience across different development sectors and project types is important.
- Strong report writing, analytical, and presentation capabilities are expected.
- Confident verbal communication skills are needed for working with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
- The ability to juggle multiple workstreams and deadlines efficiently is essential.
- Experience contributing to sustainable development and placemaking work is beneficial.
- Candidates should be able to offer practical, evidence-based planning advice.
- The role requires a professional approach while supporting project delivery to a high standard.
