Key Responsibilities

  • Collect solid waste and recyclable materials from customer locations and curbsides.
  • Load collected materials into the waste collection vehicle.
  • Sort recyclables and deposit them into the appropriate compartments of the collection truck.
  • Assist the driver with the safe operation of the vehicle, providing guidance during backing and maneuvering in tight spaces.
  • Operate vehicle equipment to compact trash and materials.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of the waste collection vehicle to ensure all necessary equipment (e.g., broom, shovel) is present.
  • Immediately report any customer-related issues to the driver.
  • Identify, tag, and remove prohibited waste items from waste carts or cans, notifying the driver.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and equipment checks during all duties. Comply with all federal, state/provincial, local, and company safety and vehicle operation regulations.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to enhance routing efficiency.
  • Maintain established route quality standards.
  • Consistently wear all required personal protective equipment, including gloves, reflective vests, safety glasses, and work boots.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance when interacting with customers or the public while in uniform.
  • Assist the driver in maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle's interior and exterior.
  • Provide support as needed in sorting, cleaning carts, warehouse upkeep, stacking pallets/gaylords, placing cans in roll-off containers, and operating the cardboard compactor.
  • Participate in safety and branch meetings.
  • Undertake other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not mandatory.
  • One to three months of relevant experience or training is desirable but not required.
  • A valid driver's license is preferred but not required.
  • Must meet the company's criteria for safety-sensitive functions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively with others.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to operate all necessary job-related equipment.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift in an outdoor environment for approximately 90% of the time.
  • Must be able to utilize hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and balance.
  • Visual requirements include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Capacity to manually lift or move up to 65 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to manually push or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, humidity, and varying weather conditions (rain, extreme heat, and cold).
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, toxic/caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work is performed outdoors up to 100% of the time.
  • Continuous work on routes away from the branch location throughout the day.
  • Occasional work in high or precarious places.
  • Constant work in motor vehicle traffic conditions.
  • The work environment is typically loud.
