Job description

Role Overview

This position is responsible for managing inventory processes across the entire store, including the sales floor and pharmacy. The role covers best-practice execution, monitoring, and training for stock procedures, plus support for pharmacy inventory tasks such as receiving, counting, ordering, and handling returns. It also includes ownership of on-shelf availability, stock accuracy, pricing integrity, returns, and in-store inventory workflows, along with confirming planogram compliance.

Core Duties

  • Track and guide the correct use of reports and system tools that affect front-end and pharmacy stock balances and pricing accuracy.
  • Maintain loss-prevention and asset-protection practices, and submit claims for shipment overages, shortages, order mistakes, and damaged merchandise, including prescription products.
  • In stores where this is required, open and close the store when management is unavailable, including system start-up, cash handling, cashier support, and preparing the sales floor and stockroom for the day.
  • Support customer service by greeting shoppers, offering help, resolving issues when acting as leader on duty, and reinforcing service behaviors across the team.
  • Coach team members on warehouse and vendor inventory steps, including order creation, review, and receiving.
  • Process deliveries while vendors are present, manage one-box receiving, confirm delivery status, contact vendors about missing scheduled deliveries, and raise tickets when orders are inaccurate.
  • Under pharmacist-in-charge supervision, confirm pharmacy shipments, daily warehouse postings, ABC prescription and OTC orders, secondary vendor orders, flu and dropship orders, tote audits, shortage tracking, and damaged-product reporting.
  • Complete end-to-end on-shelf availability work for planogrammed departments, including disposals, call-ins, vendor returns before expiration, and scan outs/scan-out returns for subscribed and pharmacy departments.
  • Handle pharmacy inventory tasks under supervision, including recalls, hazardous-waste-related returns, vendor returns, damaged salvage returns, and transfers or excess-inventory returns where permitted.
  • Carry out pricing work such as price changes, markdowns, markdown deletions, accurate signage, and other required regulatory pricing actions.
  • Support ordering for the front end and pharmacy by ordering expense items, monitoring manual pharmacy orders for excess, and maintaining consigned stock as needed.
  • Keep pull-and-quarantine items updated and stored in the correct holding area.
  • Maintain accurate counts and on-hand quantities across departments, stockroom, overstock areas, and pharmacy smart counts.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local rules for regulated products such as alcohol and tobacco.
  • Maintain inventory documentation, including receiving and posting products into the inventory systems, and keep invoices, receipts, and return authorizations organized and retained.
  • Prepare for physical inventory and assist with inventory-day activities, including store setup and oversight of the third-party inventory team.
  • Keep counters and shelves clean and properly merchandised.
  • Stay knowledgeable about store systems and equipment.
  • Assist and coach the team on package delivery tasks, package scanning, daily inventory functions, package returns, and execution of the Pickup Program.
  • When acting as leader on duty, complete POS-related transactions such as scan-error logs, price checks, item-not-found handling, price edits, voids, returns, refunds, cash drops, and change dispensing.
  • Follow company policies and procedures, maintain respectful working relationships, and complete additional assigned tasks.

Training and Development

  • Participate in company training programs and finish all required e-learning, including safety-related modules.
  • Obtain and maintain any state-required pharmacy license or certification.

Communication

  • Act as a bridge between management and non-management staff by coaching others on inventory systems and, when leading on duty, sharing task assignments and escalating disciplinary concerns and customer complaints to management.

Qualifications

  • At least 6 months of prior Walgreens work experience for internal applicants, or 1 year of retail experience for external applicants.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently, except in Puerto Rico.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Internal applicants must have an “Achieving expectations” rating on the most recent performance review and no written discipline within the last 12 months.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and execute tasks effectively.
  • Experience recognizing operational problems and putting corrective actions in place.

Preferred Background

  • Previous experience as a shift lead, pharmacy technician, designated hitter, or customer service associate is preferred.
  • Prior Walgreens experience with an evaluation on file is also preferred.
