Role overview

The Merchandise Processor role sits within the Donated Goods Retail department and reports to the Production Manager. This is a non-exempt, in-store position focused on keeping donated merchandise moving smoothly through the processing flow and onto the sales floor while maintaining the organization’s quality and production expectations.

What the job involves

This position supports store operations and customer service by handling donated goods from start to finish. The work centers on sorting, hanging, pricing, tagging, stocking, and rotating merchandise in line with production targets and quality standards.

  • Handle textile donations by sorting, hanging, pricing, tagging, and moving items to the sales floor to help the store meet production and sales goals.
  • Process other donated goods such as housewares, electronics, media, shoes, and miscellaneous items by sorting, pricing, tagging, and transferring them to the sales floor.
  • Keep the sales floor organized, refreshed, and rotated as needed.
  • Work in accordance with the quality and production standards established by Goodwill Keystone Area.
  • Monitor daily production and share updates with the supervisor.
  • Stay aware of daily, weekly, and monthly production and sales targets.
  • Identify appropriate merchandise for the Ecommerce team.
  • Support overall store operations with flexibility as needs change during the day.
  • Deliver prompt, courteous customer service to shoppers, donors, and coworkers.
  • Take part in company programs and special events as required.
  • Complete additional tasks assigned by management.
  • Follow all organizational manuals, handbooks, policies, and procedures.
  • Help maintain a safe work environment and complete duties in a safe manner.
  • Keep the Production Manager informed about progress, issues, and concerns.

Qualifications and skills

No formal education is required for this role. Candidates should be able to read, write, and carry out basic math. The job also calls for the ability to meet both quality and productivity expectations, learn equipment and technology, follow spoken directions, work well in a team, and adapt quickly to changing needs.

The role requires a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends. Work takes place in an open warehouse setting, with exposure to changing temperatures and weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and cold.

Physical demands

  • Stand continuously for more than 75% of the shift.
  • Bend forward or to the side repeatedly at about 60 degrees for 50% of the shift while placing or removing items from carts.
  • Work with the neck bent forward about 30 degrees for more than 75% of the shift.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist height for 25% of the shift.
  • Lift 25 pounds every few minutes for more than 75% of the shift.
  • Push and pull carts requiring up to 25 pounds of force across a distance of 100 feet for 25% of the shift.
  • Repeat the same hand, wrist, and arm movements every few seconds for more than 75% of the shift.
