Where you'll work
Job description
Role overview
This position sits within Braze’s Creative and Brand organization and is focused on leading and scaling the design function as a key strategic, conceptual, and operational driver. The role goes beyond visual quality control: it is about shaping a high-performing team, strengthening design culture, and ensuring the function can grow with the business.
The successful candidate will set ambitious standards for craft and thinking, coach future leaders, and create an environment where ownership can move deeper into the team. The role also works closely with strategy and brand leadership to build design systems that are insight-led, scalable, and emotionally compelling.
Leadership, team building, and talent growth
You will guide a multidisciplinary design team that spans brand, motion, and other creative disciplines. Hiring and team composition should prioritize conceptual ability, taste, and strategic understanding, not execution alone. You’ll be expected to maintain a firm quality benchmark, make timely people decisions when standards are not being met, and support junior leaders so they can take on real ownership and direct their own teams.
Systems, process, and operational scale
This role includes creating repeatable design workflows, systems, and templates that help the team produce consistently strong work at a larger scale. You’ll look for bottlenecks in briefing, review cycles, production, and delivery, and work with Creative Ops and Marketing Ops to improve efficiency without lowering the standard of the output.
Strategic and conceptual leadership
A major part of the job is turning brand positioning, insights, and strategic frameworks into clear and flexible visual systems. You will help sharpen ideas through a design lens, ensuring the work is not only attractive but also tied to brand and business goals. Concept-driven thinking should guide the visual direction across the team.
Strategy partnership and integration
The role partners closely with strategy leadership to shape direction early, align on success criteria, and keep teams working from shared frameworks instead of isolated briefs. You will help translate strategy into practical creative guidance and establish regular working rhythms that keep strategy and execution aligned throughout the process.
Cross-functional and executive collaboration
You will work upward with senior leaders and executives to align creative direction with broader business priorities. You’ll also build strong working relationships across Brand, Product Marketing, Demand, Events, Content, and Communications. In addition, this position serves as the final decision-maker on visual direction for the brand and is expected to anticipate risks and cross-functional needs before they become problems.
Creative oversight and craft
This role owns the evolution of Braze’s visual identity and design systems across many touchpoints, including brand and campaign work, websites and digital experiences, event and experiential marketing, paid media, out-of-home, motion, and internal brand materials. You will collaborate with motion designers, oversee freelancers and vendors, and step into hands-on design when senior conceptual input is needed.
What success looks like
Success means the team consistently produces thoughtful, visually strong work at scale, supported by clear processes for briefing, review, execution, and delivery. Junior leaders should steadily take on more responsibility, performance issues should be addressed promptly, and strategy and design should be tightly connected. Cross-functional partners should see the design team as a strategic thought partner, and the brand should feel unified and emotionally resonant across every channel.
Experience and background
The ideal candidate brings at least 15 years of professional design experience, including senior leadership responsibility, plus 5 or more years managing people and building teams. Experience in both agency and in-house settings is important. Strong command of Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and motion fundamentals is expected, along with the ability to collaborate confidently with developers, strategists, and senior stakeholders.
Compensation and rewards
For candidates based in the United States, the expected starting base pay range is $130,000 to $194,000 per year. The expected on-target earnings range is $155,000 to $232,000 per year, including bonus or commission. Final compensation can vary based on factors such as location, skills, knowledge, and experience.
In addition to cash pay, this role is eligible for a broader rewards package that includes RSU equity grants, giving you an ownership stake in the company.
