Job description
Role overview
The Senior Procurement Specialist (Band 6) will support the delivery of procurement services for community and mental health services across several NHS Trusts. The role focuses on putting procurement plans into action, managing key spend areas, and making sure sourcing activity supports organisational goals, delivers value for money, and follows procurement law.
You will work independently while supporting the Procurement Business Partner, offering specialist advice to internal stakeholders and taking the lead on selected procurement categories. The position covers strategy development, supplier management, contract negotiation, and contract monitoring to help achieve quality improvements, efficiency gains, and cost savings.
Strong engagement with both clinical and non-clinical teams is central to the role. You will use clear communication and influencing skills to encourage participation in procurement activity, manage sourcing projects, maintain procurement records and systems, and ensure all work meets governance, legal, and sustainability standards.
You will also contribute to better ways of working, help shape policy, and strengthen team capability through training, coaching, and ongoing professional development. Overall, the role is important in supporting compliant, strategic, and effective procurement that contributes to strong patient care and organisational performance.
Category management and sourcing
You will own designated spend categories, review usage patterns and market conditions, and turn that analysis into procurement approaches that achieve value for money. This includes leading sourcing activity from start to finish, such as writing specifications, running tenders and quotation exercises, assessing submissions, and driving standardisation across products and services to improve efficiency and compliance.
Contract and supplier management
You will be responsible for negotiating supplier agreements to secure strong commercial outcomes and for managing contracts across their full lifecycle. This involves monitoring supplier delivery, carrying out regular performance reviews, resolving issues when they arise, and maintaining productive supplier relationships so services continue to meet business needs.
Stakeholder engagement
You will develop effective working relationships with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders across multiple Trusts, providing expert procurement guidance and practical support. Through persuasive communication and strong influencing skills, you will help stakeholders take part in procurement processes and adopt compliant, standardised solutions.
