About the Role

This is an onsite position in Gadsden, Alabama, focused on carrying out center-wide maintenance work across custodial areas, roads, and grounds in line with government, corporate, and management requirements.

What You Will Do

  • Keep roads and walkways safe by applying sand and removing ice where conditions create hazards.
  • Maintain lawns through fertilizing, herbicide application, mowing, watering, and starting new turf areas.
  • Care for trees by fertilizing, pruning, watering, transplanting, and removing dead or unsafe trees.
  • Maintain shrubs through fertilizing, pruning, watering, and adding wood chip mulch.
  • Pick up and dispose of litter, garbage, and debris from grounds, streets, parking areas, entrances, sidewalks, and exterior steps.
  • Use the proper tools and materials to keep the property in good condition.
  • Carry out custodial tasks such as floor care, restroom and workspace cleaning and sanitizing, vacuuming, and washing walls, windows, and woodwork.
  • Dust furniture and fixtures as needed.
  • Keep grounds and dumpster areas clear of trash and litter.
  • Support other maintenance employees with building upkeep tasks.
  • Follow and reinforce the center’s zero-tolerance policies.
  • Take part in student employability programs and related activities.
  • Help maintain a safe, respectful environment free from harassment, intimidation, and disrespect for both staff and students.
  • Model appropriate behavior, mentor students, monitor skill development, and step in when inappropriate behavior is observed.
  • Deliver positive customer service and contribute to a constructive working atmosphere.
  • Handle other assigned duties as needed.

Job Requirements

  • Permission to participate in Academic and Career Technical Training is required.
  • Experience in grounds keeping is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed both in an office setting and at different locations across the center.
  • The role requires regular walking, stair climbing, and visual monitoring of the center environment.
  • The employee must be able to move quickly in response to emergencies or physical altercations to help protect students, staff, and property.
  • The employee must be able to safely drive a passenger vehicle while supervising students at the same time.

Physical Requirements

  • The role involves frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, and hearing.
  • Occasional use of hands and arms for handling objects, tools, controls, and reaching is required.
  • Work may involve close proximity to other people, including shared office space.
  • The employee may need to lift or move up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are required.
