Role overview

The Trade Assistant role supports the Piping and Mechanical team in a shipbuilding setting. The position involves helping prepare materials, tools, and equipment, alongside carrying out general cleaning tasks as directed by the immediate supervisor.

This opportunity is aimed at people who want to build a lasting career in the trades. Strong interest in progressing within the field is important, and candidates who perform well and suit the role may be considered for an apprenticeship with the Piping and Mechanical team.

Key duties

  • Support Confined Space Entry Sentry and Fire Sentry activities when required.
  • Assist tradespeople by getting materials, tools, and equipment ready for the task at hand.
  • Perform cleaning tasks across the workshop and vessels under construction.
  • Follow Austal’s HSEQ policies and procedures at all times.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining HSEQ standards for yourself and your teammates.
  • Keep work areas tidy and well organised.

Essential requirements

  • Current driver’s licence.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to carry out work safely and to an acceptable standard.
  • Competence using standard hand tools.
  • Good time management and the ability to meet supervisor-set targets.
  • Physically fit and healthy.
  • Either hold, or be studying toward, a Certificate II in Engineering.
  • At least 1 year of experience in the engineering or construction industry as a trade assistant.

Preferred experience and licences

  • Forklift licence.
  • EWP licence with 11m endorsement.
  • Ability to work in line with an issued permit.
  • Capability to demonstrate First Attack Fire Fighting Equipment use.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Confined Space Entry Sentry and First Sentry.
